noellecuvos's %%%%%'s Rate Growing Post

Define..

Ratio
is comparing 2 different quantities measured in the same units.

Rate is comparing 2 different quantities measured in different units.

Ratio and Rate are different because, rate compares different units and ratio compares the same units.

Page 60 question 5:
What is the unit rate in each ?

a) A blue whale eats 8 tons of krill in 2 days.

b) The cruising speed of a blue whale allows it to travel 193Km in 10 hours.

c) A bull moose bellows 15 times in 2 1/2 hours.

...a)
8/2=4
2/2=1

4T/1 day

...b)
193/10=19.3
10/10=1

19.3Km/1 h

...c)
2 1/2 hours=150 minutes
150/15=10
15/15=1

1 bellow/ 10 minutes

Page 61 Question 10:
Trevor rode his mountain bike 84 km in 3 hours. Jillian rode 70 km in 2.5 hours. Who is the fastest cyclist ? How do you know ?

Both Trevor and Jillian have the same speed while riding their bikes. I made a ratio table for Trevor so I divided 3 by 3 to get 1 hour, and so I did the same to 84. 84/3= 28. That makes it 28Km/hour. I also made a ratio table for Jillian so I divided 2.5 hours by 2.5 to get 1 hour, so I did it to the other side as well, 70/2.5=28. That makes it 28Km/hour.

Both speeds are the same.
