Argie Garcia's 2 Minutes to Make a Difference Reflection

Please reflect and talk about the changes you made between the first and final cut of your movie. Were the student comments helpful in making your final cut better?
We made lot of changes. One of our most important changes was to make the video from 3:20 seconds down to 2:30 seconds. We also had to put in voices because in the other video we just had a lot of writing which made the video so long. Also, we had to lower the music because people said it was a little distracting. When we were editing he video we also made the pictures go a little faster and we put more transitions to each slide. When we had other students comment on our video, I think it really helped. When they told us how the video needed some changes, it helped because after they pointed it out we looked over the video and we saw what they saw.

If you did not find an expert tell us why you were unsuccessful. Be honest.
We didn't get a expert to interview so I can not answer questions 3 and 4. First we sent out alt of messages to people studying about child labour. In the end we only got two responses. One of which was with the RCMP. We couldn't do an interviews with them because they said they could only arrange an interview in the month of may. The other message we From a girl in Africa. She said she would be happy to set up a online interview with us. We couldn't do the interview because when i sen the message, she didn't reply back to me.

What was your greatest success in the 2 minutes project? What skills will you take away with you and use in the future?
I think the greatest success in the project was finishing it. It took a lot of our own time going to each others houses doing the work, sending messages, and most of all having fun doing the project. I think some skills that I will take with me is gathering information. When you gather information it helps because it makes it easier to make sentences because you have all the information written down.

What frustrated you during the movie making process? What strategies did you use to become successful?
I think we got frustrated with the time changed, how we had to hand it in earlier. When the due date was switched it was difficult because we would have to plan out when we were going to meet and because we weren't too far into the project yet. It was also frustrating when we couldn't all go to a persons house to work on the project, it would either be three of us, or two of us, but in the end we all finally got together many times and finished he project. I think strategies i used to become successful was not to get over frustrated, like don't get angry easily if things don't go the way you want it to. if the whole group doesn't want to put what you said, don't freak out just change what you made and see if they will the next time.

Why is the 2 minutes project important to grade 8 students?
I honestly think that 2 minutes to make a difference is very important because, when we are at this certain age we could start to see what is happening now instead of when it is going to be too late. If we do the littlest things now it could lead up to a big thing in the future. When you are at an older age its harder too see what is happening to the world and the people living on it. People are going through child labour, some animals are soon to be extinct, the would is getting polluted every day because of all those people who don't care enough about the world to pick something up off the floor and put it into a trash can. With every ones help, and all of them pitching in a little bit every day the world might be different than it is now.

How will you make a difference in the future?
I will try to keep donating clothes, money or perishable food items to people around the world who need it the most. I cant guarantee that i will be doing this through out my life, but i will always try to help and try to make everything that goes to the people count.

Argie's Growing Post

In class we learned how to multiply, divide, add and subtract fractions with whole numbers.
Here is my fraction quiz, this shows how i got my answers.

Now we had to pick a question from page 202, 208-209, and a word problem on page 208.

Two ways to multiply a fraction is to use a diagram or using fraction chart.
You can add up all the halves, or you could times the numerators together and multiply the denominators to get your answer.

Now we have to pick a question from page 208-209.
To divide a fraction by a whole number is simple. First you draw a picture and cut it into the fraction your dividing with, and shade in the part of the whole. After that is done, divide the diagram by the whole number in your equation. you divide the diagram using a horizontal line.

Finally we pick a word problem from page 208.
Iqaluit has frost on about 3/4 of the days in a year. It has frost on five times as many days as Vancouver. On what fraction of the days of the year does Vancouver have
frost?

sorry if pictures are a bit small

Argie's Surface Area Growing Post

Rectangular Prism

To find to find the total surface area (TSA) you can start by finding the area of the front, side and top view of the prism. To find the area of each side you use the formula l x w = A. Once you find the area of each side add them all together and times the sum by two. After hat has been done you now have the area of the rectangular prism.

Triangular Prism

You have to find the TSA of the triangular prism, first you draw a net of the prism and label the measurements. After that has been done you find the area of all the faces using the formula b x h / 2 = A. Once you have finished finding the area of the sides, you then add up the total of each side and you will have the TSA.

Cylinder

When finding the TSA of a cylinder you have to use many formulas. First you have to draw a net of the cylinder. Second you have to have to find the radius, to find the radius you use the formula d/2=r. Third, you have to find the circumfrence of the circle by using the formula pi x d=c. After that has been done you must find the area of the circle, to find the area you must use the formula pi x r x r =A. Now you have the area of the cylinder, now you must find the area of the rectangle. To do that you use the formula l x w = A. Now that you have the area of both the circle and rectangle you add both areas to get the TSA of the cylinder.

Argie's Percent Scribe for Feb 3

Hey my name is Argie. Today in class we were supposed to do questions in the textbook, and pick three to do for homework.

Question 4 - Page 150
How many hundred grids are needed to show each of the percents.
A)101% = 2 hundred grids
B)589% = 6 hundred grids
C)1450% = 15 hundred grids

Question 4 - Page 148
Chris purchased the following items:
2 Binders for $4.99 each
1 math set for $3.99
a backpack for $19.99
find the total cost including 5% GST and 7% PST.

I started this question by adding all the totals together.
$4.99+$4.99+$3.99+$19.99= $33.96
5%+7%= 12%
$33.96x 1.12= $38.04

Question 10 - Page 150
What is the cost for four tires that sell for 85$ each, plus 5% GST and a 1.5 environmental tax?
First i found the total of four tires, and i got 340$.
Then I found the taxes by doing this:
$340 x 1.065 = $362.10
I used a calculator to get this answer

I hope you enjoy my scribe, sorry its a little late.

Argie's Scribepost for Jan 6 2010

Hi my name is Argie, I had to do a scribepost and I chose question 4 on page 110.

4) Find the height of the pole where the guy wire is attached, round to the nearest tenth of a meter.

c² - a² = b²

10² - 2² = b²

10x10 - 2x2 = b²

100 - 4 = b²

96 = b²

√96 = √b²

9.7m = b

The height of the pole would be 9.7m.

PLEASE COMMENT, THANKS FOR READING.

Argie's Scribepost for December 8th

The three questions i was assigned was 5, 7, and 11, on page 99.

5) Estimate each value, to one decimal place. Check your answer with a calculator.

A) √ 14 B) √ 86 C) √136

My guesses With calculator
5a) 3.6/ 5b) 9.2/ 5c) 11.6 5a) 3.7/ 5b) 9.3/ 5c) 11.7

7) Identify a whole number with a square root between 11 and 12.

I thought the number with a square root between 11 and 12 was 133, because the square root of 133 is 11.5.

11) the square has an area of 20cm squared.

A) Use perfect squares to estimate the side length to one decimal place.
I used two perfect squares with a side length of 4 and a half of a perfect square with a side length of 2.

B) Check your answer using a ruler to measure the side of the square. Measure to the nearest tenth of a centimeter.
When i checked the side length i got 4.5 cm.

Argie's Pay It Forward

Part 1
I think pay it forward means sometimes if you do something for others they will repay you buy helping another person and the chain will never stop. Those three words can mean many things when you use them to the fullest. Don't just say them if someone drops a pencil, you pick it up and say pay it forward, your just saying it as a joke. But when you actually help someone with a big thing, you can say it or not. Most of the time people don't say it to doctors or nurses, because they help us when its needed the most.

Part 2
We had a big group, the members of this group is, me, Emmanuel, Jeric, Josh, John, Aldrine and Alvin. First we stayed after practice to help Mosis and Sunny clean up the school. We Swept the hall way, the gym, cleaned the change rooms, and more. Also, the rest of the group went to the soup kitchen, my Mother wouldn't allow me to go because she thought i was going to get the H1N1 virus. I missed it and i wished i didn't. They told me how fun it was to help.

Part 3
I think that helping the janitors was allot of fun. They were really fun to work with. Mosis told me a couple of jokes on the way. They didn't really need allot of help, but when we helped them, we made sure we did a good job.

I felt that doing a good deed and getting nothing in return was really good, because most people don't realize but the people that we help do allot more too help others. Most people don't even take the time to say thank you when someone did something nice to them.

When we asked to help the janitors they seemed really surprised. I guess they have never actually got asked from a student for help. I think that they think Sargent is a place for really nice, caring, and giving students.

We didn't ask them to pay it forward because they do so much for the school as it is. Telling them to pay it forward would be too much, because they put in so much effort to clean and take care of the school.

They reacted by saying things like are you kidding. When we told them we weren't they thought we were just a few students trying to do good things for the school, and its people.

Part 4
I think the idea of pay it forward is important because its always good to help others, knowing your not getting something in return, because most of the time the people that you help are really good.
I think our act of kindness changed the janitors, because they think o us students as caring, giving, and respectful kids now.

THERE WERE NO PICTURES BECAUSE A VIDEO WILL BE PROVIDED AT THE END.

How I ROCKED an Alien Invasion

One night Commander James Seawalker was riding in his space cruiser, when suddenly we were sucked into a planet named D2E2. Once Commander James Seawalker stepped onto planet D2E2, weird things kept happening to his mind. At first he thought it was all a dream because he was seeing little green aliens, he slapped himself around a couple times and he figured out it wasn't a dream. He was heavily armed with his PROPORTION SABER, RATIO GUN and RATE GRENADES.

The first alien, Jeffery appeared out of the green. Commander Seawalker was challenged with his first attack.
Commander Seawalker grabbed his PROPORTION SABER and started to think.

David can saw a log into three pieces in 7 min. If he continues sawing at a constant rate, how long will it take him to saw a similar log into six pieces?

Commander Seawalker came up with an answer. He went up to Jeffery and said "It will take 14 minutes to cut a log into 6 pieces"
After saying his answer, Jeffery was so shocked that he got the answer he couldn't move, while he was paralyzed, he chopped up Jeffery into pieces.

Another Alien popped up out of no where. He said his name was Norman. "After seeing what you did you my best friend I'm going to throw another mind blowing question at you!!!"
James took out his PROPORTION SABER again but this time he held his RATIO GUN and got ready for the next question.

Last night 30 cm of snow fell in 6 h. If it continues snowing at the same rate, how long will it take for 45 cm of snow to fall?
Determine the answer two different ways.

Commander Seawalker didn't know what to do, but he had to answer or else he wouldn't be able to leave, so he thought really hard.

Commander Seawalker used both a proportion table and a ratio table to get his answer.
Once he figured out the answer, commander pointed his RATIO GUN at Norman, and with one shot he was gone forever.

Now Seawalker was roaming planet D2E2, he ran into THE SHOCKER and his army of troops. "WE WILL DESTROY YOU FOR ELIMINATING OUT BEST MEN. NOW YOU SHALL HAVE TO FACE THIS QUESTION!"
Commander Seawalker was awaiting his final challenge. In that time he got ready his RATE GRENADES. The Question that was going to determine if he was the best Commander in the world was...

Delia was paid $35 for 5 h of babysitting. How much should she receive for 3 h? Use a unit rate to find the answer.
All Commander Seawalker could do was laugh because it was such a easy question.

He said to THE SHOCKER that she will get paid $21 for 3 hours.
Commander Seawalker got a safe distance from THE SHOCKER and all his little troops, he threw all of his RATE GRENADES and finally destroyed the last of the evil mathematical aliens for good. He flew off on his space cruiser and went back to him home planet, earth. He told everyone about how he landed on planet D2E2. Everyone thought he was a nerd, but also a hero.
THE END.

Argie's %%%%%'s Rate Growing Post

For homework we had to make part one of a two part post.

Definitions:
Ratio - Compares two quantities measured in the same units
Rate - Compares two quantities measured in different units

What is the difference between ratio and rate?

The difference is rate is measured in different units and ratio is measured in the same units.

Questions:

4. Determine the unit rate in each situation.

a) An orca swims 110 km in 2 h.
2h / 2 = 1h
110 km/2 = 60 km
60km/1h

b) A Canada goose flies 800 km in 12.5 h
12.5 h / 12.5 = 1
800/ 12.5 = 64
64km/1h

c) Cathy plants 45 daffodils in 30 min.
30min x 2 = 1h
45daffodils x 2 = 90 daffodils
90 daff/1h

10. Trevor rode his mountain bike 84 km in3 h. Jillian rode 70 km in 2.5 h. Who is the faster cyclist? How do you know?

They are both the fastest because, if you divide 84 by 3 you will get 28, and if you divide 70 by 2.5 you will still get 28.

PART 2

For part two we had to answer two questions.

1) what would the recipe look like if it was serving 10 people?

2) what would the recipe look like if it was serving 1 person?

INGREDIENTS FOR 10 PEOPLE

To find the ingredients for 10 people you just multipy the recipe by 2.5, because 4 x 2.5 = 10.

1/2 lb ground beef
1 medium onion diced
1 celery finely sliced
1 clove garlic
14 oz can of tomato chopped
1/2 can of tomato paste
1 tsp parsley
1 1/2 tsp basil
1 tsp oregano
1 tsp sugar
1/2 tsp Worchesterchire sauce
1/2 tsp seasoning salt
1 bay leaf

INGREDIENTS FOR 1 PERSON

To find the ingredients for 1 person you divide the whole recipe by 4, because 4 / 4 = 1.

1/8 lb ground beef
1/4 medium onion diced
1/4 celery finely sliced
1/4 clove of garlic
3.5 oz can of tomato chopped
1/8 can of tomato paste
1/4 tsp of parsley
0.375/7.5 ml tsp of basil
1/4 tsp of oregano
1/4 tsp of sugar
1/8 tsp of Worcestershire sauce
1/8 tsp of seasoning
1/4 bay leaf

What were the mistakes you made on your test. Show examples of answers that were wrong. What was your mistake. How will you remember what to do in future tests.

Some mistakes I made was not showing how I got my work, not showing ratios in lowest terms, and not reading the questions right.

The next time I do a math test I am going to read the question more carfeully, remember to make lowest terms and study harder.

Rewrite 2 questions that gave you difficulty with different numbers.

1) A picture frame with a width to length ratio of 4:6. If the width of the photo is 8 cm, the length of the photo is

2)A rapid transit has 17 passengers on it as it starts to run. At the first stop 3 passengers get off and 37 passengers get on. What is the ratio of the number of passengers who were on the train as it arrived in the station to the number who were on the train when it left the station? Express your answer in the lowest tesms.

Scribepost Question 18

18. The ratio of the width ot the length of the Canadian flag is 1:2.

a) The Flag on the cover of an atlas is 12 cm wide. How long is it?

The flag would be 24 cm long because the ratio witht eh Canadian flag is 1 to 2 thats just multiplying the width by two.

b) A large flag outside a Calgary school is 3 m long. What is its width?

The width would be 1.5 because your just dividing the length by two.

Scribepost for October 14

TODAY WE LEARNED ABOUT RATIOS.

We had to write down some keywords for our foldable .
These words are:
- Two-term ratio
- Three-term ratio
- Part-to-part ratio
- Part-to-whole ratio
- Rate
- Unit rate
- Unit place
- Proportion

Two-term ratio means comparing two quantities measured in the same units.
Example. 10:4 or 10 to 4
.
Three-term ratio means comparing three quantities measured in the same units.
Example. 4:6:10 or 4 to 6 to 10 .

Argies coin jar blog

Our homework for math, must be do one Purple or one Blue or one Red.

1.Would the jar look the same if the jar was canadian?
- No beacuse there would be more coins to choose from, for example a looney or a toonie. The colour of the coins would be different.

2.If it was on bar graph which coin would appear the most and which would show the least?
- I think 1 cent would show the most, and 5 cents would show the least. Because by looking at the jar i can see alot of copper, which i think are pennies.

Argie's BOB on graphing

3 things I know about graphing

1) Pictographs are best for comparing data that can be easily counted represented by using symbols.
2) Bargraphs are best for comparing data across categories.
3) Circlegraphs are best for comparing categories to the whole using percents.

I could've put colour in my bars, labels on my misleading graph, and a better
