2 Minutes to Make a Difference: Poverty in Africa ( Version 1 )

2 Minutes to Make a Difference: Poverty In Africa ( Final Cut )

Talk about the changes you made between the first and final cut of the movie. Were the student comments helpful in making your final cut better?
We made many changes in our video. Many of the comments were very helpful and the rubric made us think more on what we need to work on to make it more successful. What we changed in our video was our voices. When we spoke, our voices were to quiet or too fast. So we decided to change it and make it more clearer. We also added our interview and how we made a difference. Mrs. Armstrong was a great help to us. She really caught mistakes that people wouldn't usually hear. One of them were saying Africa was a country but, it was a continent. So we have to redo our script.

How did you find your expert? What did you learn from your expert?
We found our expert on searching on the internet. Our expert's name was Donna Beegle. She is an expert on poverty In the United states. She gave us plenty of information that we could we and one of them was comparing Africa with the United States. Even though she was mostly dealing with the US. She did give us information on poverty in Africa. Sadly, that information did not give on camera.

What was the greatest success in the 2 minutes project? What skill will you take away with you and use in the future?
I think the greatest success was finishing the video and I can't ask for more than that. I thought it was a great success because for me this is the first video I have done. We worked hard doing this video and it's finally done. We did our best to make to good, for example, we match our script to our pictures. We did that to make people understand what we were talking about. I know for sure I will take my editing skill because editing makes things more better and so I can improve on it.

What frustrated you during the movie making process? What strategies did you use to become successful?
What frustrated me was finding an expert. I was incharge of finding someone we can interview. I finally found one and decided to e-mail them letting to know that we were going to interview them. I took awhile for a response because it was soon the due date. Next, we needed a place to call her and it took awhile, but it all payed off in the end. The strategies use used was to use the time very well to be done.

Why is the 2 Minutes project important to Grade 8 Students?
The 2 minutes to make a difference project is important to the grade 8 students, because we learn more things. We learn more about our earth and different of places around the world, how they are struggling. Whiling we are learning about our topics,we are also improving our skills. We improve our editing and revising skills but, not just that we learn more about our technology skills too. Most of all, our teamwork builds up. We learn how to do things together. Sometimes we also learn how to do things on your own, to become more independent.

How will I make a difference in the future?
I will make a difference in the future by continuing to donate money or unwanted clothes to different charities, to help people around the world. I will also make our world more greener and make better decisions throughout my life.

Sharmaine's growing post

A) This video show how i got my answer to my fraction quiz.
It show you how to divide and multiply factions with whole numbers.

B) Two ways of multiplying a fraction with a whole number is by drawing a picture.

-an example would be drawing 5 groups of 2/3. Then you would add up each group giving your answer.

Another way would be multiplying the two numerators toge
ther and keeping the denominator the same.

C) To divide a fraction by a whole number you can draw a fraction strip.

My example is 1/4
÷ 2.

Use your fraction strip and divide it into fourths. Then color in 1/4 of it. Next you divide your fraction strip in half horizontally. As shown in the picture below
.

C) How to solve a word problem:
-well first the problem is:
A pitcher of orange juice is 2/3 full. If four students equally share the juice, what fraction of the full pitcher does each student get?

Next you find the key words:
-2/3 full
-4 students
-what fraction of the full pitcher does each student get?

You will need to have a simple sentence answer:

Each student will get______of the pitcher of orange juice.

Finally you will have to solve it. To solve thi
s equation i used a fraction strip and divided it into 3rds and colored in 2/3 of it. Next I divided the strip in 4 vertical and colored in 2 rectangles giving me my answer.

COMMENT!

Part 2:

a) fraction x fraction: when you multiply a fraction by fraction, the first step is to multiply the two numerators. Then multiply the two denominators. Once you are done that you must simply your fraction if it is not yet.

3/4 x 2/5 = 6/20

b)fraction x mixed number: When you multiply a mixed number and a fraction the first step is to convert the mixed number into an improper fraction by multiplying the whole by the denominator and the adding the numerator. once you get the improper fraction, you multiply the two numerators and the two denominators. If your answer is an improper fraction, you have to change it back to a mixed number by dividing the numerator by the denominator. Then put in it lowest terms. But if your answer is a proper fraction, you just simply it to the lowest terms.

4 7/8 x 1/7 = 39/56

c)mixed number x mixed number: When you multiply mixed numbers you have to change them into improper fractions. next, you multiply the numerators and denominators. After that, you turn that improper fraction back into a mixed number. Once everything is done we simply it .

2 1/3 x 2 1/3 = 14/9

COMMENT!

Part 3:

How many 3/4's are there in 1 1/2?

To answer this equation first you draw 1 1/2 color in the whole and 1/2. next divide 1/2 into 4th. finally count how many times 3 goes into 1 1/2

how many 1/2's are there in 3/4?

To answer this equation first you draw 3/4. Next you draw a line going across to draw the 1/2. The numerator of the half is 1, so how many times does 1 goes into the shades squares? 6 times.

Sharmaine's Pay it Forward

Part 1
Paying it forward made a difference to people. It changes people by making them think about someone else rather themselves. It makes one person do a good deed knowing that they helped someone without anyone telling them too. When I watched the movie it made me feel happy knowing that anyone can make a difference. Some types of paying it forwards are helping a homeless guy out on the streets or donating things so do not used anymore. Doesn't feel good to help someone out and making them smile. Another thing about the movie is that anyone can make a difference and make them smile. That's what i felt about the movie and the message that came to my head about it.

Part2
Our act of kindness was to donate clothes or stuff we didn't use at home anymore. Just like coat for kids. We did another act of kindness and that act of kindness was handing out cards to teacher. When we handed it out they were happy and full of joy! Some teacher didn't know what "pay it forward" meant so we explained it to them. We chose this activity because giving clothes and stuff we don't need can be used for someone who does need it and handing out cards makes teachers feel happy and giving them a little early Christmas greeting! We helped kids and teacher. We did our act of kindness on December 5 to 7.

Part 3
Our act of kindness went well. All teacher accepted our cards. They were all happy. They thought paying it for was a good idea to spread the joy. I felt really good inside that I actually did something good to someone else besides me. At first people didn't want to do it but at the end it really changes their mood. They were all happy that we are doing this kind of things to change the world. We asked everyone to pay it forward. They liked how you can spread the joy and said they will do an act of kindness.

Part 4
It's important because you do something good for someone else and it felt great at the end. I liked doing this project. It was a great work of team work. Everyone joined in. Hopefully their will be alot of smiles on people faces! I hope it spread around and it continues to be like that...

How to stop an Alien Invasion using Porportions

One clear silent morning, something came from the sky. It was shaped as an oval, it was so many dazzling lights, it was a UFO! While it was coming down, it sent messages on the t.v that they'll take over the Earth. As the aliens continued to talk they said that they'll go away if someone answers three proportional questions that was waiting at three convenience store. I took that chance to saved the earth and went to the nearest convenience store.

The first convenience store question was:
Question- 6.Delia was paid $35 for 5h of babysitting. How much should should she receive for 3h? Use a unit rate to find the answer.
Answer-
She received $21 in 3 hrs.
I successfully got the question right and I was down to 2 more. I headed down to the next convenience store, knowing that my next question will be waiting for me.
Question- 13.Two quarters have the same value as ten nickles. What is the value of five quarters in nickles?
Answer-

The value of 5 quarters in nickles is 25 nickles.

I got the question right and I was left with 1 question left I went to the last convenience store in my neighbourhood. The last question was waiting for me.
Question- 17. Fresh pickerel is advertised in a local market.
a.) How much will 6kg of pickerel cost?
b.) Use a proportion to find the cost of 1600g of pickerel.
Answer-
a.)

The cost of 6kg of pickerel is $52.80.
b.)

The cost of 16kg of pickerel is $14.08.

I was done all my questions! I went out of the convenience store seeing an alien waiting for me. He told me I did a great job and said that they will leave the planet without harming it. I headed home seeing the UFO leaving. I woke up and realized it was all a dream. ;)

PART 1
Rate- Uses two different quantites
Ratio- A relationship between two quantities
What is the difference between ratio and rate?
The difference is that a ratio is the comparing two numbers with the same unit and rate is the measurements of different units per unit.

6. Gina earns $78.00 for working 6 h. Asad makes $192.50 after working 14 h. Determine each person’s unit rate of pay. Who has a greater hourly rate of pay?

Gina- $13.00/hr. Asad- $13.75/hr.
Asad has more money per hour than Gina.

10. Trevor rode his mountain bike 84 km in 3 h. Jillian rode 70 km in 2.5 h. Who is the faster cyclist? How do you know?

Trevor- 28km./hr Juillian- 28km./hr
They both cycle the same speed.

There is 119.00 dollars in the jar in 7 hours. How many dollars are in the jar in 1 hour?

$17/hr.
