Darlene's Fraction Growing Post

Part 1

A) Video

B) Textbook Pg 202, Question 6

Fraction: 3x3/8
C) Textbook Pg 208, Question 4

Fraction: 1/4/2
D) Textbook Pg 208, Question 7

A pitcher of orange juice is 2/3 full. If 4 students equally share the juice, what fraction of the full pitcher does each student get?
Part 2

E) Fraction x Fraction

Fraction: 2/3 x 5/6
F) Fraction x Mixed Number

Fraction: 1 1/5 x 2/5

Turn the mixed fraction into an improper fraction by multiplying the whole number and the denominator, then add the numerator. Use that as a new numerator and use the same denominator from the mixed number. Then you multiply the numerators and denominators to get the answer.
G) Mixed Number x Mixed Number

Fraction: 2 3/4 x 2 3/4

Turn both mixed numbers into an improper fraction by multiplying the whole number and the denominator, then add the numerator. Use that as a new numerator and use the same denominator from the mixed number. Then you multiply the numerators and denominators, and convert the improper answer back to a mixed number.

The pictures are dark because the lights were off in my room and I was too lazy to turn the lights on. Sorry ^_^

Part 3

Division

Fraction: 1 1/2 / 3/4

Turn the mixed fraction into an improper fraction by multiplying the denominator and the whole number together and then add the numerator. Use the answer as a new numerator and use the old denominator. Replace the mixed fraction with the improper fraction and start the division. For the first way, you can cross multiply by multiplying the numerator of one fraction together with the other denominator from the other fraction and you do the same with the other denominator and numerator. Then you can just simplify the answer into lowest terms.
Fraction: 3/4 / 1/2

Questions 7 & 11

7. A herd of 100 caribou was moved to a new location. The population increased by 10% the first year and then increased by 20% the second year.

A. Find the population after the second year.

- 100/10 = 10%
100+10 = 110
110/10 = 11x2 = 22
22 = 20%110+22 = 132

There will be a population of 132 caribous.

B. Explain why there was not a 30% increase in population over the two years.

The increase is not 30% because the 20% increase is based on the population after 10% increase in the first year.

11. A student is awarded a $1000 scholarship and places it in an account that pays 3% simple interest per year.

A. What is the total value of the scholarship amount at the end of the second year?

- 1000/10 = 100
100/10 = 10
10x3 = 30
30 = 3 %
1000+30 = $1030
1030/10 = 103
103/10 = 10.30
10.30x3 = 30.90
30.90 = 3 %
1030+30.90 = $1060.90

The total value of the scholarship is $1060.90

B. What is the single percent increase in value of the scholarship after two years?

- 3% = 30
30+3% = 30.90
60.90/10 = 6.09%

The single percent increase is 6.09%

Darlene's Pay It Forward

Part 1

The movie is a really good inspiration for a lot of people. It will teach you a lot of things that are good for you. It will also help you realize that the bad things that you have been doing needs to stop, otherwise it will all get worse. It will teach you that bullying is not a good sign and it will lead to a miserable life. Children you are bullied, mostly starts to hate how life goes for them. They will start acting different and most of them will cut themselves because they are not happy about the things that has been going on in their life. By watching the movie, it will put a lot of sense into you and it will help you a lot.

Part 2
My friends, Vanessa, Charis, Ammorn and I decided to give out Christmas cards and candy canes to the people who were outside walking. We started going to random people around the street and started giving them candy canes and a Christmas card. Our act of kindness was done during our lunch hour.

Part 3
Vanessa, Charis, Ammorn and I went outside for lunch. We started delivering candy canes and Christmas cards to the people we saw walking on the street. Giving out candy canes and Christmas cards was a lot of fun for all of us. I felt really great giving those things out to the people around the street. I'd like to do this act of kindness once again to have a good time! When we were giving them out, most of the people were really surprised. I had no clue what they were thinking, but I hope it was something good because I saw them smiling afterwards. The Christmas cards had each letter of "Pay It Forward" on them, and when we were handing them out, they looked a little confused of what paying it forward meant. So, we told them that it is about showing an act of kindness, and then they started to smile and we were happy to be able to put a smile on people's faces.

Part 4

"Pay It Forward" is a very important thing for all of us. It will make a difference throughout the whole world. Many people out there have a hard time trying to survive, and I'm pretty sure we can help them out by donating. We can help donate food, gently used clothing, toys and a lot of other things! I hope that we made a difference to the people's lives and I hope that they themselves pay it forward as well !

How I Stopped An Alien Invasion Using Proportion

I was attacked by aliens. They held me as hostage and they would not let me go unless I solved 3 proportional problems.

They gave me the first proportional problem and I solved it correctly. This is how I solved it .

1. Delia was paid $35 for 5 hours of babysitting . How much should she receive for 3 hours?

I divided 5h by itself and got to an hour . Then I divided $35 by 5 and got to $7. I multiplied 1h by 3 and I got 3h. Then I multiplied $7 by 3 and got $21.

Delia will receive $21 for babysitting in 3 hours .

The aliens gave me the second proportional problem and I solved it correctly. This is how I solved it.

2. David can saw a log into three pieces in 7 minutes . If he continues sawing at a constant rate, how long will it take him to saw a similar log into six pieces?

3 pieces of log multiplied by 2 would equal 6 pieces . So then I multiplied 7 minutes by 2 and got 14.

It will take 14 minutes for David to saw 6 pieces.

The aliens gave me my final proportional problem and I solved it correctly. This is how I solved it.

3. Last night 30 cm of snow fell in 6 hours . If it continues snowing at the same rate , how long will it take for 45 cm of snow to fall ?

I divided 6h by 6 and got to 1h. Then I divided 30cm by 6 and got to 5. I multiplied an hour by 9 and got to 9h . Then I multiplied 5cm by 9 and got to 45cm.

It will take 9 hours for 45cm of snow to fall .

The aliens released me and went home crying . x]

Darlene's %%%%%'s Rate Growing Post

Part 1

Ratio - Compares two different quantities measured in the same units .

Rate - Compares two different quantities measured in different units .

What is the difference between Rate and Ratio ?

The difference between the two are one is measured in the same units and the other is measured in different units .

Page 60

4 . Determine the unit rate in each situation .

a) An orca swims 110 km in 2 h .
  • 2/2 = 1h , 110/2 = 5km . = 55km/h .
b) A Canada goose flies 800 km in 12.5 h .
  • 12.5/12.5 = 1h , 800/12.5 = 64km . = 64km/h .
c) Cathy plants 45 daffodils in 30 minutes .
  • 30x2 = 1h, 45x2 = 90 daffodils . = 90 daffodils/h .
Page 61

10. Trevor rode his mountain bike 84 km in 3 h . Jillian rode 70 km in 2.5 h . Who is the faster cyclist ? How do you know ?

Trevor -
  • 3/3 = 1h , 84/3 = 28km . = 28km/h .
Jillian -
  • 2.5/2.5 = 1h , 70/2.5 = 28km . = 28 km/h .
None is a faster cyclist because they are both cycling on a speed of 28 km per hour .

The total amount of coins add up to $100.00 . You divide it with 3 friends . how much would each person get?
  • 3/3 = 1 person , 100/3 = 33.33 . = $33.33/person .

Darlene's BOB & RATIO for Oct. 20

Today in class we did a lot of work that had to to with part-to-part ratios, part-to-total ratios and part-to-part-to-part ratios . Then Mr. Harbeck assigned us to make a scribe post about it.

Part to Part Ratios
  • Green to Blue = 6:1
  • Blue to Yellow = 1:4
  • Red to Green = 6:6
Part to Total Ratios
  • Green to Total = 6:17
  • Blue to Total = 1:17
Three Part Ratios
  • Yellow to Green to Blue = 4:6:1
  • Red to Yellow to Green = 6:4:6
Ratio, Fraction, Decimal and Percent
  • Blue to Yellow = 1:4, 1/4, 0.25 & 25%
Equivalent Ratios
  • Red to Green = 6:6
Simplification :
  • Red to Green = 3:3
Red : 6 divided by 2 = 3
Green : 6 divided by 2 = 3

The three questions !
  1. What would the ratio be for Green, Yellow to Total ?
  2. What would the ratio be for Yellow, Red, Blue, Green to total ?
  3. How would you write Green to Total in fraction, decimal and percent ?
Part 2

Mr. Harbeck told us to re Bob our Bob post and talk about our mistakes on our test.

The mistakes I made on my test was not expressing the ratio in lowest terms and reading the question wrong even though the important things I needed to know was already highlighted.

Ex.

The ratio of the red cards to the whole deck is :
  • I put in 2:4 instead of 1:2. I forgot to express the answer in the lowest terms.
I will remember to express the ratio in lowest terms by reading the highlighted words carefully next time.

2 questions that you had difficulty with

Q. 17)

Team Scored by Scored Against
Baseball Team A 10 8
Basketball Team A 115 92
Hockey Team A 6 4

Q. 4)

Four students are running for student council president. Of 60 students polled, 30 chose Mike, 6 chose Patricia, 12 chose Brian, and the rest chose Karen. What is the ratio of votes for girls to votes for boys in the student council election? Express the ratio in lowest terms.

Ratio Homework Scribe for Oct. 17

Yesterday, Mr. Harbeck assigned us to answer one question from pages 51-54. I picked number 14 from page 52.

4. Three eights of the 96 adults in the McGregor are less than 150 cm tall.

a) Draw a diagram to represent the statement. (0) Representing people.

000000 000000
000000 000000

000000 000000
000000 000000

000000 000000
000000 000000

000000 000000
000000 000000

b) How many adults in the McGregor clan are less than 150 cm tall? Show your work using equivalent ratios.

There are 36 adults less than 150 cm tall because the ratio 3:8 is equivalent to the ratio 36:96.

c) How many adults are 150 cm or taller? Explain your thinking.

There are 60 adults that are 150 cm or taller. There are 96 adults in total subtract 36 adults who are less than 150 cm tall equals 60 adults who are 150 cm or taller.

Darlene's Coin Math for Oct. 11

The assignment for our long weekend was to answer two questions from the Coin Math activity. We were told to answer one purple question and one of any other color.

1. How much money do the coins add up to?

- Mr. Harbeck told us that the coins add up to a total of $100.

2. Would the jar look the same if it was Canadian money?

- The jar would not look the same because there will be many different types of coins and there will also be more colorful.

Coinmath Part 2

1. A- Combination of USA coins .

0.01 = $0.50 x 80 rolls = $40.00
0.05 = $2.00 x 10 rolls = $20.00
0.10 = $5.00 x 4 rolls = $20 .00
0.25 = $10.00 x 2 rolls = $20.00

= $100

1. B- Combination of CAN coins.

0.01 = $0.01 x 50 = $0.50
0.05 = $0.05 x 40 = $2.00
0.10 = $0.10 x 50 = $5.00
0.25 = $0.25 x 40 = $10.00

2. How full is the jar ?

The jar is 3/4 full. Another way you could say it is 75% because they are the same. If you use American or Canadian coins , they will fill up 75% of the jar's space because they are pretty much the same.

BOB for Oct. 6

For today's scribe, I will be telling you three things I know about graphing!

These are the three things I know about graphing:

1) Different types of graphs.

There are a lot of many different types of graphs that can be used to show a set of data.

Examples are bar graphs, double bar graphs, circle graphs, line graphs and picto graphs.
  • Bar graphs are best for comparing a set of data.
  • Double bar graphs are best for comparing two sets of data.
  • Circle bar graphs are best for comparing categories by using percent.
  • Line graphs are best for showing changes in a set of data.
  • Picto graphs are best for comparing data that can be counted and represent by using pictures.
2) Misrepresenting Data

People may misinterpret the data and draw false conclusions when graphs are misleading.

Misleading features of graphs may include the following:
  • Distorting scales.
  • Distorting the information by using visuals of different sizes.

3) Advantages and disadvantages.

Every type of graph has its own advantage and disadvantage of showing a set of data.

Bar graph & double bar graphs

Advantages
  • Excellent use for comparing one or two sets of data.
  • Easy to read and understand.
Disadvantages
  • Can be tempting to compare too many things, the graph becomes difficult to understand.
  • Limited space for labeling with vertical bar graphs.
Circle graphs

Advantages
  • Shows total percent for each category.
  • Visually appealing.
Disadvantages
  • Hard to compare two sets of data.
  • No exact numerical data.
Line graphs

Advantages
  • Can easily compare continuous sets of data.
  • Shows the increase and decrease of a data set.
Disadvantages
  • Use only with continuous data.
Picto graphs

Advantages
  • Easy to read.
  • It can easily handle large sets of data using icons.
Disadvantages
  • Best for only 2-6 categories.
  • Icons must be correct in size.
What I need to improve on:

I can improve on explaining how graphs could be misleading and also being able to write at least a paragraph about a graph.

Scribepost for Oct. 5

The Four 4's

The homework for today is to explain how those two are both the same.

The answer to any division problem is a fraction made up of the same two numbers. That (I believe) is where the division symbol comes from.

The dots on the division symbol represent numbers and the slash represent fractions.

Scribepost for Sept. 30

4. Samantha recorded the temperature on a hot day. She displayed the data in a line graph.

a)
Explain how did graph could be misleading.
- Because of the break on the y-axis, that is why the graph could be misleading.

b) What conclusion does the graph suggest about the changes in temperature?
- The graph suggests that the temperature changed between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m.

c) How should the graph be redrawn to make the data clearer?
- The graph should be redrawn by having no breaks on the scale of the y-axis.
