Allysa's Scribepost for November 30, 2009

Today we had a quiz in the beginning of class. After the quiz, we continued our foldables in the "SQUARES" section. The first thing we did was we made a number line and labeled the perfect squares and looked for patterns.

Number Line:

On
e pattern we saw was the spaces between the perfect squares, it went up by 2 every time. The spaces were: 3, 5, 7, and 9.

To fill in the spaces, we had to use fractions.

To convert them into a decimal, we just used a calculator.
e.g. 1 divided by 3 = 0.333333333
Then we added the whole number before the decimal.

1, 1.33, 1.66, 2.

For 5 spaces it would be:

1 1/5, 1 2/5, 1 3/5, 1 4/5, 1 5/5

HOMEWORK:
Find the decimals for 5 spaces.

Sorry, I put it up late.
THANKS FOR READING & PLEASE COMMENT ! :D

Scribepost for November 30

Today we had to do a number line and label the perfect squares.

We also had a quiz about squares.

For the number line we had to label the squares from squares from 1-5
Which equals 1=1 2=4 3=9 4=16 =5=25

We also figured out what the patterns were.
One pattern was numbers between perfect squares.

The pattern that we had to do was what are the numbers between the spaces.

So for the first one we had to do 1 1/3, 2 2/3, 3 3/3

For 5 spaces

4 1/5, 6 2/5, 7 3/5, 8 4/5, 9 5/5

Our homework is what are the next numbers of the two spaces.

For 7 spaces and 9 spaces.

Jex already did a blog for SQUARES so I did today's blog.

The area of a five square:

2.23 x 2.23 = 4.97

The area of a six square:

2.45 x 2.45 = 6

The area of a seven square:

2.64 x 2.64 = 7

The area of an eight square:

2.82 x 2.82 = 7.95

The area of a nine square:

3 x 3 = 9
The nine square is the only perfect square.

The power of proportion!

I was walking to school, when I saw a UFO land on my school. I ran inside and saw that the aliens were holding Mr.Harbeck hostage, then he yelled. "Noel, save me with your proportion skills." Then I replied, "Don't worry Mr.Harbeck, Noel is here!" So then i grabbed a text book and yelled out the following question:

Delia was paid $35 for 5 h of babysitting. How much should she receive for 3 h? Use a unit rate to find the answer.

This is what I did:
I got to the unit rate per hour, that looked like this:
5h/5=1h
$35/5=$7

So then I got $7/hour.

I then had to get the $ for 3 hours:
1h x 3 = 3hours
$7 x 3 = $21

I saw that one of the tenticles that were holding Harbeck got loose, and it only had 2 tenticles left. So I hit him with another question:

David can saw a log into three pieces in 7 minutes. If he continues sawing at a constant rate, how long will it take him to saw a similar log into 6 pieces?

This is my answers:
To get from 3 pieces to 6 pieces you would have to double it, so I just doubled 7 minutes to get 14 minutes.

Then I noticed a liquid falling onto Harbeck's head, it was the aliens eyeballs. They melted so I decided to give another question a shot and it would die. Here was the last question:

Two quarters has the same value as ten nickels.

What is the values of five quarters in nickels?

Here's what I did:
I used a unit rate to find the answer to this question.

2 quarters / 2 = 1 quarter
10 nickels / 2 = 5 nickels

then I followed up with this;

1 x 5 = 5 quarters
5 x 5 = 25 nickels

Once I finished that sentence the alien exploded and the room was covered in green goo. Harbeck then thanked me and pressed on the intercom; "Office, Can you get Moses down here to clean this up."

THE END!

How I stopped an alien invasion

I was walking down the street when i saw a UFO in the air it was shining in my face then it landed right in front of me. Then a big ugly alien came out and said if you want to see your world again you better get these 3 questions right.

The answers that i said to the alien.....

4. a)3$
b)50

5.a) 2$
b)17

6. 21/3

Then the alien said my answers were right so he went back in his UFO and flew back to his planet and never came back.

How I stopped an Alien Invasion using Proportion

One night , I had to throw out the garbage, when suddenly a UFO light was shinning on my face, but I couldn't see what it was. When it landed, I started to run away from it, but when I looked back the aliens started running faster after me. After 15 minutes I got so tired that I hid in a garbage bin. The aliens got suspicious and stopped to start searching for my foot prints.When they saw half my footprints leading to the garbage bin, they started walking to it and tried to open it. I held it down so they couldn't open it, but they just kept on trying until they got it. When they opened it no one was there ! I was under all that stinky garbage the whole time, I got out when they left. When they left, I started to walk home. After a few blocks near my home , I saw something chasing after me , so I started to run, but when I got home I realized that it was my dog. After all that running, I took a shower, and went to bed. When I closed my eye, there was an alien right in front of me staring at me with wide beady eyes. THE END .

I'M VERY VERY SORRY , if this was late, because someone went on my google account and changed my password.

Today in class, we finished up the piece of paper with the squares.

We started of with the original square that had 4 left overs.

Then we added the next 2 squares and ended up with 31 left over squares. The way we add onto the square is by adding a bar of 10 squares on the two sides and then filling in the corner. You were also allowed to find a shortcut on adding the squares as long as you got the same answer as the other kids in class.

With the 31 left over squares, we made an extra line around. We were able to use up all 400 squares that we started of with.

As we add on to the square we also add on to the chart.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Today's homework is:

- How many perfect squares can you make with 4 squares?
- What is the approximate side length of a square that uses - 2 squares
- 3 squares
- 5 squares

Gilberts scribepost for Nov. 25, 2009

Today in class we were working on the colored piece of paper with the original square on it. What we had to do was take our
two other squares and cut them in to pieces and put them on the original square

HEARS SOME PICTURES IF YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND WHAT I JUST WROTE....

First im going to show you the t-chart which we have just added new stuff to.

This is the newly t-chart that we have added new numbers to.

This was the old original square that we worked on last class.

As you can see this is the original square but with the two other squares glued on with it.

sorry you can't see the pictures to well.

Our homework

How many perfect squares can you make with 4 squares?

What is the approximate side length of a square that uses 2 squares 3 squares 5 squares?

In math class ,
We had to take one big piece of colored paper and fold it to a half, then we had to cut out 4 squares from the grid paper he gave us, the first two squares we had to cut 10 by 10, the second was 8x10 square and added a 2x10 together so we got 10x10. On the top of the first half we got to write this :

On the bottom half we got to make a bigger square

To get the other area of the square that is getting bigger we just added more blocks on the sides. We had to add more squares on top and the side.

sorry , my coloring is bad.

OUR HOMEWORK IS :

Why are 4 squares left over?

Don't forget to comment ! , If I did anything wrong, just type it in the comment box !

THANKS !

Brendan's Scribepost for November 24, 2009

Today in Math class, we built squares with grid-like paper.

First, we got a big piece of paper, folded it in half, and wrote this on it at the top.

To find the area of a square, you must square one of the sides.
E.g 2 squared = 4
Squaring a number means to multiply a number by itself.
In class, we had to find out what was the biggest square we could make with 2 squares.
I found out that a 1.4 by 1.4 square is the biggest square we could make. I had four squares left over.
Each square is 0.1 of the whole 1.4 by 1.4 square.
That's what we did in Math class today .
P.S - Sorry for the bad pictures. I have a really bad camera and I can't find a place with good lighting.

Jamie's Scribepost for November 17, 2009.

Today in class, we started a new unit by making a new foldable with Ms U.

The first question she asked us, was "What do we know about rectangles?"
Our class came up with a couple answers:
  • They have 4 sides
  • Not all sides have to be the same
After, we had to get into groups of two. Each group of two, had 16 tiles. Our task was to make a rectangle on the grid paper she gave us, with all of the 16 tiles.
We came up with three ways:

1.
A = L x W
A = 4 x 4
A = 16 tiles.

2.
A = L x W
A = 1 x 16
A = 16 tiles.
3.
A = L x W
A = 2 x 8
A = 16 tiles.

Then, Ms U showed us a times table. We checked and circled to see if our answers were true, and if they actually did equal 16.
Next, we were doing something called "Building Squares". We were asked "How many tiles do we need?". But remember, a square has four equal sides. So, these were the answers we came up with:
Then, Ms U showed us a grid with four squares coloured. She asked us, "How many tiles do I need to add in order to make another bigger square?". The answer we came up with was 5 squares.
After that, Ms U gave us this for homework, and these were the answers I came up with:
What is the relationship between the side length of the square and the area?
- You just multiply the side length of square by itself to get the area of the square.
Why are the areas called perfect squares or square numbers?
- I think they are called that, because the sides are all even.

Well, I think that was all for today. I'm sorry if I forgot to mention anything, and if I did, please let me know.
Thank you for reading my scribepost and please leave a comment!

How I Stopped An Alien Invasion

It was a peaceful day in 2012 until there was an alien invasion!! We had to stop them by answering 3 questions. There was at least 300 of them.
Here are the 3 questions.

1) A small gear turns 18 times in the same
time that a large gear turns 4 times. How
many times will the large gear turn if
the small gear turns 54 times? Draw a
diagram to help set up a proportion and
solve the problem.

I solved this by multiplying 18 to 3 and what I did on the top i also had to multiply
4 by 3.
So x= 12
If the small gear turns 54 times the big gear will turn 12 times.

YEA... 100 aliens got eliminated! Only 200 more!

2) Two quarters have the same value as ten
nickels. What is the value of five quarters
in nickels?

quarters 2 5
------- = --- = ---
nickels 10 x

To find the value we have to divide 2 by 2 so we get 1.
So now divide 10 by 2 and we get 5.
Now 1 quarter equals 5 nickels.
We now multiply 1 by 5 and we'll get 5
Now multiply 5 by 5 and we get 25.
So x equals 25.
Five quarters equals 25 nickels.

Now 100 more of the aliens got eliminated.
Only 100 more aliens.
Only 1 more question.

3) David can saw a log into three pieces in
7 min. If he continues sawing at a constant
rate, how long will it take him to saw a
similar log into six pieces?

logs 3 6
---- = --- = ---
mins 7 x

So multiply 3 by 2 and we get 6.
Now we multiply 7 by 2.
So we get 14.
David can saw 6 logs in 14 mins.

Now one more 100 aliens got eliminated. But one of the alien had a baby!!

Should we eliminate it?

How I stopped an alien invasion using proportions

It was a warm bad summer day in the year 2020 and the some of the most dangerous aliens were planning to invade the whole Earth by firing a SUPER laser at Earth unless we answer 3 proportional questions.

The questions are:

Delia will recieve $21 in 3 hours.

David can saw alog into 3 pieces in 7 minutes. If he continous sawing at a constant

How I stopped an Alien Invasion using Proportion

One day, there were 2 boys named Rob and Bob. They were flying their kite when suddenly they saw something flying in the air other than their kite. It was coming closer by the second and eventually landed right beside them. It was a U.F.O! 2 aliens came out of a door that opened horizontally. They told us that if we don't solve 3 of their proportional questions, they'd rip our kite into pieces! We didn't want to lose our kite just yet because, we weren't done playing with it.

One alien said, "A small gear turns 18 times in the same that a large gear turns 4 times. How many times will the large gear turn if the small gear turns 54 times? Draw a diagram to help set up a proportion and solve the problem."
We replied with a drawing:

Also with a sentence: The large gear will turn 12 times if the small gear turns 54 times.

The other alien continued, "A gardener takes a half hour to mow and weed a lawn that measures 20 m by 15 m. He charges $25.00 per hour. How much should the gardener receive for a lawn that measures 40 m by 30 m?"
We answered with another drawing:

Also, another sentence: The gardener should receive $25.00 for mowing and weeding a 40m by 30m lawn.

Then, both aliens asked at the same time, "David can saw a log into 3 pieces in 7 min. If he continues sawing at a constant rate, how long will it take him to saw a similar log into 6 pieces?"

Finally, we showed them another drawing:

Also, one last sentence: It will take him 14 min to saw a log into 6 pieces.

After answering their 3 questions, they hopped into their U.F.O. and flew away.

The End :)
Please comment.

How I Stopped An Alien Invasion Using Proportion

So I was on my way to school, about halfway I got a phone call. I answered the call and heard a strange sounding voice. They told me that if I didn't show up at my house in 10 minutes, they would attack my parents and doom the planet. I could not believe what was happening. They were holding my parents as hostage?! I ran as fast as I could, but stopped at McDonalds for a drink and continued on. I got there in 9 minutes and 59 seconds. As I got there, I noticed a strange vehicle had landed in the corner of my house. Once I got in, there were 2 purple transparent blobs holding my parents inside their stomach. The first thought that came into my mind was " well, that is just disturbing. " Then, out of the blue, 1 blob said " We Bloogies will not let go of your guardians nor doom your Earth, unless you answer 3 proportion problems. " This was the start of my new heroic actions.

The first problem they asked me was;

Delia was paid $35 for 5 h of babysitting. How much should she receive for 3 h? Use a unit rate to find the answer.

I answered " Delia should receive $21 for 3 h of babysitting " They made me show my work so here it was.

The second problem they asked was;

David can saw a log into three pieces in 7 minutes. If he continues sawing at a constant rate, how long will it take him to saw a similar log into 6 pieces?

My reply was " It would take him 14 mn to saw 6 pieces. " I once again had to show my work.

The last problem they asked me was;

Last night 30 cm of snow fell in 6 hours. If it continues snowing at the same rate, how long will it takefor 45 cm of snow to fall ?

My last and final answer was " It would take 9 hours for 45 cm of snow to fall "
Here was my proof.

After I answered all their problem, they spit out my parents in the most disturbing way and pleaded forgiveness. Soon finally, I forgave them and they scurried back to their home planet. The end.
Thaanks for reading (: Please leave a comment if you wish.

How I stopped an Alien Invasion with proportion :D

It was a beautiful summer night , a full moon plus many stars . I decided to go lay down on the deck and watch the stars , hoping for a shooting star ! I was very quiet , until i heard something flying high up above my head ! I looked up to see a large object of some sort, it was extremely fast . I closed my eyes , and made a wish .. * CRASH !* i ran out to whatever it was . It wasn't a shooting star , because there were lights on it . to my surprise , out popped a small weird looking creature . "Hello , I come in peace " . I saw it in movies , so i thought it would world . Apparently , they didn't like when i did that , the small creature then pulled out a ray of some sort . While pointing it at me , he said " Answer three of our questions . If you do not answer them correct , we destroy your planet . If you answer them correctly , we shall know you humans come in peace and we will leave to our planet ."

At an amusement park, a new thrill ride was introduced. It costs $7.50 for 3 rides on the Wild Slider.

a) What is the Wild Slider’s unit rate per ride?

rides / $

3/7.50

3/3=1

7.50/3=2.50

so .. it is $2.50/ per ride :)

b) At this rate, what would it cost for 18 rides on Wild Slider?Determine the answer two different ways.

rides/$

1/2.50

1 x 18 = 18

2.50 x 18=45

so .. 45 DOLLARS FOR 18 RIDES ;)
