Jenn's Fraction Growing Post !

Over the Past Few weeks we have been learning about dividing and multiplying fractions ! Here is my growing post .

a)I recorded a video, but I couldn't find it ;(

b) Using one question from questions 6 or 7 on page 202 of the textbook, explain two ways to multiply a fraction by a whole number. You should use pictures to help explain. -

the question i chose was 4 x 1/2 !
one way you could do this equation is to draw 4 groups of 1/2 to get the answer of 4/2 or 2.

another way you could do the equation is 4/1 x 1/2 . You multiply the 2 numerators first and then you multiply the two denominators .

c) Using one question from questions 4 or 5 on page 208 of the textbook, explain how to divide a fraction by a whole number. You should use pictures.

To divide a fraction, you cut it into how many rows the whole number is. Since the fraction is one half, you can shade in one half of the whole. After that, since the fraction is still one half, it means you can have one fourth of the shaded section. That concludes to the answer being one eighth.

d)A pitcher of orange juice is 2/3 full. If four students equally share the juice, what fraction of the full pitcher does each student get?

The Answer ? Each student gets 2/12 or 1/6 of the full pitcher of orange juice.
2/3 divided by 4 = 2/12 or 1/6 (simplify )

Part two .

Fraction x Fraction

To do Fraction x Fraction you simply multiply the denominator and numerator to get the answer.

Mixed number x A Fraction

first off you , make the mixed fraction into a fraction to do that you have to multiply the whole number by the denominator then add the numerator. After you have done that , you have to do the fraction, then you just multiply both the denominator and numerator to get the answer.

Mixed Number x Mixed Number

To multiply a mixed number by a mixed number is suprisignly very simple. All you must do is convert both of the mixed numbers into fractions then you multiply both fractions to get the answer. After that, you must simplify your answer then divide it to get your final answer. (:

Jennifer's Surface Area Growing Post !

- Sorry about not putting pictures , it wouldn't let me upload it !

Triangular Prism:
To find the area of a triangle you must use this formula :
a=lxw/2

By using this formula I can find the area of a triangular prism,

Here are the steps to find the total surface area !

1. make a net of the triangular prism
-use the formula for each face on the triangular prism.
2.use the rectangular prism formula when there was a square and used the triangular prism formula when there was a triangle.
3. After I found the area of all the faces I added them all up to get the Total Surface Area

Rectangular Prism:
To find the area of a square you use this formula
a= lxw

Using this formula I can find the area of a rectangular prism.

Here are the steps to find the total suface area of a rectangular prism :)

1.make a net of the rectangular prism
2.use the formula for each face on the prism.
3. find the area of all the faces and add them all up to get the Total Surface Area !

Cylinder :

For the cylinder, you use 2 formulas.

How do you find the circumference ?

you use this formula. C = pi x r x r

If you need to find the area of the circle you use this formula:

a = (pi) x d

Here are the steps to find the total surface area of a cylinder !

1. Make a net of the cylinder.
2. Use another formula to get the diameter of the cyclinder which is, r x 2 = d.
3. I used the radius to calculate the circumference.
4. I used the diamter to find the area of the circle.
5. I used the rectangular prism formula to figure out the rectangular part of the net.
6. I then added the 2 circles and the rectangular part of the net and got the Total Surface Area.

Jennifer's Percent Scribepost

Question 1.

Chris purchased the following items:
-2 binders for $4.99
-1 math set for $3.99
-a backpack for 19.99
Find the total cost including 5% GST and 7% PST.

First off , I added the prices together and multiped 4.99 by 2 becuase it says 2 binders at 4.99 each .

All these items came up to $33.96

Then i added the GST and the PST which have me 12 % .

Question 2

How many hundred grids are needed to show each of the following percents?
101% equals 2 hundred grids
589% equals 6 hundred grids
1450% equals 15 hundred grids

Question 3.

Describe 2 ways you could calculate the total tax of an item?

I would use a ratio table and my other way is using a formula where you multiply the original number by a percent greater than 100.

Scribe .

Question 15

Evaluate:
square root of
:a)49=7
b)64=8
c)652=25.2

To get all those answers, I simply used my calculator.

Question 16

Evaluate:
Square root of:
a)9=3
b)25=5
c)1600=40

Again to get those answers, I used my calculator.

Question 23 A helicopter landing pad has a square shape.
The area is 400m squared.
Use Prime factorization to fine the side length of the pad.

400
=200 x 2
=100 x 2 x 2
=50 x 2 x 2 x 2
=25 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2
=5 x 5 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2
400 = (5x2x2) x (5x2x2)
400 = 20 x 20
400 = 20 squared

Jennifer's Pay It Forward . (:

Part 1 -

The movie "Pay it Forward" taught me many things . Something small can turn into something huge . It's probably one of the best movies i've ever watched . It gives inspirations to adults
and children . I mean , look at the child (Trevor) who started pay it forward .
He was only 11 ! He's some what a hero . He affected alot of people with just helping three people , then they helped three people , and so on (aka , Paying it Forward).
My favourite part of this movie was the very end . Not the part where he gets stabbed ,
but the part when everyone came t0 his mother's house with flowers and candles .
To me , that was the saddest part , and I saw many people just tearing a bit .
Part 2 -

Our Pay it Forward act of kindness ? Well , Keanna and I went to The Forks .
It was packed there . We handed out candy canes and cards that encouraged people to Pay it Forward . We chose this activity mainly because it's a place we can have fun ,
and we can socialize with random strangers . We didn't necessarily help a 'group' of people .
but i do think we helped people that were having a bad day. We did our act of kindness on Sunday afternoon (December 6 , 2009)

Part 3 -

Personally , I think our act of kindness went very well . Every person we gave a candy cane and card to , they smiled, and said thank you . I felt good about giving random strangers cards and a candy cane . People reacted to our act of kindness , with smiles , questions , suprised faces too ! We wrote in all of the cards for people to pay it forward , and hopefully they did .
There was one couple though . They made us smile the most , mainly because they actually socialized with us , and the man was a painter/artist , and he said he would be happy to donate something to our school , if ever needed .

Part 4 -

The idea of "Pay it Forward" is important , because it teaches us to think about
others for a change and not just ourselves . It also teaches us that there are people
in this world who are unfortunate , and even just making someone's day is important ! Hopefully , our act of kindness has made a difference in people , and help them too !

Jenn's Scribe . (:

So , i had to do a scribe for questions 4, 14 , and 9 from the mathlinks textbook (pg. 99-100)

Here you go ;

1. Estimate the Square root of each number , to one decimal place . Check with a calculator.
*PICTURE IS AT THE TOP*

14. Alex is thinking of a number. The number has a square root between 7 and 8 and it is a multiple of 12.
a) What number could he be thinking of ? He is thinking of the number 60 .
b) Is there more than one answer? Explain.
Well , I doubt it . because 60 is the only number that is a multiple of 12 that have a square root between 7 and 8 .
9. What are possible whole numbers that have a square root between 4 and 5 ?

Jennifer's Rate Growing Post

Ratio-a way to compare 2 quantities, sort of like a fraction but only sideways . example: (a word ratio) pandas to raccoons (a regular number ratio) 3:10

Rate- when you compare 2 things in different units. example: $12/per hour

The difference between rate and ratio is rate compares two quantities measured in different units and ratio compares two quantities measured in same units.

Jennifer's BOB 2

In this scribe we had to Show some examples of answers that were wrong.
-What was your mistake.
-How will you remember what to do in future tests.

My mistake was not reading the question correctly and also not studying all that much . To improve this , i will study from now on for future math tests .

1. In a group of 84 students surveyed, the ratio of students preference is seven oatmeal eaters to four granola eaters to three toasted 0 eaters.

of 84 students, how many prefer oatmeal ?
Of 84 students, how many prefer granola ?
What percent ( to one decimal place ) of the group prefers toasted 0's ?

2. A rapid transit has 17 passengers on it as it starts to run. At the first stop 3 passengers get off and 37 passengers get on. What is the ratio of the number of passengers who were on the train as it arrived in the station to the number who were on the train when it left the station?
Express your answer in the lowest terms?

Definitions for keywords .

Today , Harbeck told us to tell us the definitions of the keywords , here they are :

two-term ratio- this means comparing two quantities measured in the same units.

three-term ratio- this means comparing three quantities measured in the same units .

part-to-part ratio- this means comparing different parts of a group together.

part-to-whole ratio- this means comparing one part of a group to the whole group

rate- the comparison of two quantities measured in different units.

unit rate- A rate in which the second term is 1

unit place- A unit rate that involves prices. Often shown per 100 g or 100 mL.

proportion- An equation that says that two ratios or two rates are equal. It can be written
infraction form as 1/4 = 25/100.

Coin math 2

Part 2

1. How full was the jar?

I think the Canadian jar is 1/4 because 1,280 is 3/4 so then i divided 1,280 by 4 . Then i got 320. So i think the jar is 1/4 full.

2. How long would it take to fill the jar if you put one coin each day?
I think You would have to start on January 1st, 2010.

-If your using 1 cent i think it would take 27 years or 118 days because i divide 100 by 0.01 and the amount was 10,000 days. Then I divide 10,000 by 366 days per year.
I'm pretty sure The year would be January 1, 2010 to April 28, 2037.

The Four 4's .

4-4/4x4=0
4x4/4-4=0

Similarity :
- they all have four 4's .
-they both equal the same .

difference :
- they use different operations .
- it's somewhat switched around

Jennifer's coin math scribe !

What is the most common coin in the jar?
- When I look at the jar , it looks like there are many pennies in there .

How full is the jar?

- The jar is 75% full. I know this, because it's not quite filled to the top .

It's not much , but anyways .. LEAVE A COMMENT PLEASE :D

Ferrari's BOB

Three things i know about graphs:

- all graphs need a title, labels, and intervals

- there are many types of graphs
(eg. line graph, bar graph, circle graph, pictograph , etc. )

- you can distort a graph , and it will still be correct (misrepresenting )

To improve , I could have spent way more time on this assesment , i could have shaded in the bars , wrote a paragraph , finished the misleading graph , etc .

Thanks for reading my post , COMMENT (:
