Darlene's %%%%%'s Rate Growing Post

Part 1

Ratio - Compares two different quantities measured in the same units .

Rate - Compares two different quantities measured in different units .

What is the difference between Rate and Ratio ?

The difference between the two are one is measured in the same units and the other is measured in different units .

4 . Determine the unit rate in each situation .

a) An orca swims 110 km in 2 h .
  • 2/2 = 1h , 110/2 = 5km . = 55km/h .
b) A Canada goose flies 800 km in 12.5 h .
  • 12.5/12.5 = 1h , 800/12.5 = 64km . = 64km/h .
c) Cathy plants 45 daffodils in 30 minutes .
  • 30x2 = 1h, 45x2 = 90 daffodils . = 90 daffodils/h .

10. Trevor rode his mountain bike 84 km in 3 h . Jillian rode 70 km in 2.5 h . Who is the faster cyclist ? How do you know ?

Trevor -
  • 3/3 = 1h , 84/3 = 28km . = 28km/h .
Jillian -
  • 2.5/2.5 = 1h , 70/2.5 = 28km . = 28 km/h .
None is a faster cyclist because they are both cycling on a speed of 28 km per hour .

The total amount of coins add up to $100.00 . You divide it with 3 friends . how much would each person get?
  • 3/3 = 1 person , 100/3 = 33.33 . = $33.33/person .
Part 2

This is the grade 8 ingredients for Spaghetti Sauce . We were told that this ingredients serves up to 4 people. Mr. Harbeck , gave us 2 questions to answer .

1. What would the recipe look like if it had to serve 10 people? Show your calculations.

I multiplied 4 by 2.5 which equals 10 . Then I decided to multiply the ingredients by 10 .

2
1/2 medium onion diced

2

1
1/4 tsp Worchestershire Sauce

1

2.What would the recipe look like if you had to only serve 1 person? Show your calculations.
