Brendan's Rate Growing Post

Part 1:

Ratio: Compares quantites measured in the same units

Rate: Compares two quantities measured in different units.

The difference between rate and ratio is ratio compares quantites in the same units and rate compares quantites measured in different units.

a) Estimate which is the better buy. Show your thinking.

I think the 1000 mL jar is the better buy because $2.80 (the 250 mL price rounded) multiplied by 4 is $11.20.

b) Determine the better buy. Show your work.

The better buy is the 1000 mL jar because $9.59/10=0.959 and $2.79/2.5=1.116.

Page 61, 10. Trevor rode his mountain bike 84 km in 3 h. Jullian rode 70 km in 2.5 h. Who is the faster cyclist ? How do you know ?

They both ride their bike at 28 km/h. I know that because 84/3=28 and 70/2.5=28

Coin Rate Question: What is the rate for dollars per person if there are $100 and 25 people.

The rate for dollars per person if there are $100 and 25 people is $4/person.

I know that because $100/25 people = $4/1 person.

Part 2:

Ingredients for Spaghetti Sauce

1/2 lb ground beef
1 medium onion diced
1 Celery finely sliced
1 clove garlice
14 oz can of tomatoes chopped
1/2 can of tomato paste
1 tsp parsley
1 1/2 tsp basil
1 tsp oregano
1 tsp sugar
1/2 tsp Worchestershire Sauce
1/2 tsp seasoning salt
1 bay leaf

1) The recipe would look like this if it was supposed to serve 10 people:

1.25 lb ground beef
2.5 medium onion diced

2.5 Celery finely sliced
2.5 clove garlic
35 oz can of tomatoes chopped
1.25 can of tomato paste
2.5 tsp parsley
3.75 tsp basil
2.5 tsp oregano
2.5 tsp sugar
1.25 tsp Worchestershire Sauce
1.25 tsp seasoning salt
2.5 bay leaf

I know that the recipe would look like that because I know that 4x2.5=10 so i just multiplied everything by 2.5.

2) The recipe would look like this if it was meant to serve one person:

1/8 lb ground beef
1/4 medium onion diced
1/4 celery finely sliced
1/4 clove of garlic
3.5 oz can of tomatoes chopped
1/8 can of tomato paste
1/4 tsp of parsley
0.375 tsp of basil
1/4 tsp of oregano
1/4 tsp of sugar
1/8 tsp of Worchestershire Sauce
1/8 tsp of seasoning salt
1/4 bay leaf

I know that the recipe would look like that because I took the recipe for 10 people and divided everything by 10.
