Binesi's Scribepost for February 1 2010

For our foldable we had to copy down the key ideas:

Percents can be combined by adding to solve problems. 5% + 7% = 12%

- To calculate the increase in a number,

-You can add the combined percent
amount to the original number.
12% of 100 = 0.12 × 100 = 12
100 + 12 = 112

-You can multiply the original number
by a single percent greater than 100.
112% of 100 = 1.12 × 100
= 112

- Percents of percents can be used to determine amounts that result from
consecutive percent increases or decreases.

Then we had to do the 2 show you know questions on our foldables.

A backpack costs $35. Use the method of your choice to find the
total cost of the backpack if GST is 5% and PST is 6%. Use another
method to check your work.
First you have to add the taxes together (5+6=11)
Percent-100/100=1
Dollars- 35/100=0.35
Percent- 1x11=11
Dollars- 0.35x11=3.85
Then all you have to do is add $3.85 to $35 to get $38.85

The second way I did this was: 1.11x35=38.85

The second show you know:

What is the final sale price at each store? Which is a better buy?
Explain your thinking.
Store A: 50% off one day only
Store B: 25% off one day followed by 25% off the reduced price the
second day

I'm pretty sure you use the $200 hockey mask example.
Store A
Percent-100/2=50
Dollars- 200/2=100

Store B 1st day
Percent-100/4=25
Dollars- 200/4=50

Store B 2nd day
0.25x50=12.50
50-12.50=37.50
37.50+200=237.50

I don't know if I'm right, so correct me if I'm wrong.
