- The graph suggests that the temperature changed between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m.

c) How should the graph be redrawn to make the data clearer?

2. a) Sophie surveyed her friends about their
favourite flavour of ice cream. What
information is missing on the graph?

The information missing is the amount of people the graph is out of !

b) How could you present this data more
accurately?

If you knew how many people the graph is out of, it would be more accurate.

To make it even more accurate you could even make it into a bar graph.

3. When might it be to someone’s advantage
to present distorted data? Share your
answer with a partner.

If someone REALLY loved a certain flavour they could make the flavour really stand out by distorting it.

eg. Bright Colour, Make the number larger, etc.

Question # 6:

A.) From the pictograph, Which fruit seems to sell the best? Explain
Apples, because their drawn bigger making it seem like it was sold more.

B.) Does it seem that more cherries were sold or more peaches? Explain.
It seems that more peaches were sold than cherries, because there were more cherries drawn than peaches. But looking at the diagram 2 cherries equal to 20kg. So if you compare the kilograms sold between cherries and peaches. 100kg were sold for peaches and 90kg sold for cherries. Meaning more peaches were sold.

C.) How should the pictograph be redrawn to represent the data more accurately?
It could be redrawn by making all the fruits the same size.

6. a) From the pictograph, which fruit seems to sell the best? Explain.
- From the pictograph, the apples seem to seel the best because the apples take up more space than the other fruits.

b) Does it seem that more cherries were sole more peaches? Explain.
- It seems that that more peaches were sold than cherries because there are five peaches and 4 1/2 cherries.

c) How should the pictograph be redrawn to represent the data more accurately?

a) How is the graph misleading?

The graph is misleading because it doesn't show the value of each can.

b)Based on the graph, what can you conclude about the canned food drive?

- B looks 3 times taller than A because of the break in the interval.

b) How many times as great are the votes for B than the votes for A?
-B is only 2 times greater than A but the break gives the impression that it isn't.

c) What conclusion does the graph suggest about the election results?
-The conclusion the graph suggests is that B had 3 times the votes that A had.

d) How could the graph be redrawn to make the data clearer?
-The graph could be redrawn with the y axis going up by 10, from 0 to 200, with no break.

Scribe Post Question #17 Sept 30, 09

17) A small town recorded crime statistics over the last six years.

SORRY FOR NOT HAVING PICTURES OF THE GRAPHS I DON'T GOT PAINT!!!

[Year][1][2][3][4][5][6]

[Number of Crimes][2][6][6][2][3][4]

A) Make a Bar Graph to display the data. ( I won't have bars I'll just fill in the data.)

N O
U F 6
M
B C 4
E R
R I
2
M 1 2 3 4 5 6

E
S Year

B) Total the number of crimes for every two years. Make a new bar graph to display this data.

N O
U F
M
B C 9
E R
R I 6
M
E 3
S 1-2 3-4 5-6

Year

C) What can you conclude from the second bar graph? Do the data in the table support your statement? explain.

The second bar graph shows that the graphs are decreasing, but they have been increasing the years before. That doesn't support the data in the table. The crimes were increasing for 3 years than decreased for one year that started increasing again.

D) How is the second graph misleading?

The second graph is misleading because it states that the crimes are decreasing but they are actually increasing.

Keanna 8-17 question one

9. The two graphs show the number of
health bars sold by two students.

A) How are the two graphs different?

The graphs are different because graph B has a break in it witch changes the appearance of the
graph then how it would
normally look.

B) For each graph, what conclusion would
you make about health bar scales?

In graph A the sales were realy close to the same amount for each student. In graph B it says that chris sold twice as many bars then meagan.

C) Which graph gives a more accurate comparison of sales? Explain

Graph A would give a more accurate comparison because it has no break so there are more intigers and it goes up by less so it would tell us closer to the amount then graph B.

#1
a) How are the two graphs different?
-Graph A has no break and Graph B has a break
-Graph A goes up by 20 and Graph B goes up by 2
-Graph A has a bigger picture and Graph B has a smaller one because of the break.

b) For each graph, what conclusion would
you make about health bar sales?

In graph A the sales were very close to the same amount for each student. In graph B it says that chris sold twice as many bars then meagan.

c) Which graph gives a more accurate
comparison of sales? Explain.

QUESTION #8:

The table shows the decibel levels of different sounds in the environment.

a
) Use a bar graph to display the data. What is one advantage of using a bar graph?

An advantage of using a bar graph is, it’s an easy way to compare data and to make it even easier, the intervals are a big help too.

b) Could you use a line graph to display the data? Explain.

Yes, because a line graph is very similar to a bar graph except the bars are replaced by dots connected with lines.

c) Could you use a circle graph to display the data? Explain.

No, because the numbers go too high and there are too many categories.

d) Would a pictograph be an effective way to display the data? Explain why or why not.

No, because a pictograph is only used for one topic and how things change over time.
