Owen's 2 minutes to make difference 2010 reflection

Other student's comments were helpful because we get to learn from our mistakes and what we are missing.
1. If you did not find an expert tell us why you were unsuccessful. Be honest.
I didn't find an expert because I got lazy and distracted by good movie.

2. What was your greatest success in the 2 minutes project?
My greatest success would probably that I got to make a great movie.

What skills will you take away with you with you and use it in the future?
I would take away the skills of finding good pictures.

3. What fusttrated you during the making of your movie?
What fustrated me the most is the writting and researching part before the whole movie was made.

4. Why is the 2 Minutes project important to Grade 8 students?
The 2 minutes project is important to grade 8 students because it makes them think of the world around them and what is happening to it.

5. How will you make a difference in the future?
I will make a difference by researching for more information about climate change.

Owen's late Scribepost

Today, I was assigned to do questions 3 and 4 on page 142

3.Use mental math to determine the following:
A. 300% of 2000
2000=100% 100 x 3 = 300
2000 x 3 = 6000

B. 1/4% of 60
1% of 60 is 0.6

C. 0.1% of 40
1 divided by 100 = 0.1
1 divide by 40 = 0.025

0.1% og 40 is 0.025
4.
A. 20% of 60
If you divide 100% by 5 you will get 20%.
If you divide 60 by 5 you will get 12.

B. 250% of 400
200% of 400 is 800 because 400 x 2 = 800
50% of 400 is 200 because 400 divided 2 = 200
Then, you just add 200 and 800 togethere to 1000

C. 10 1/2% of 100
1/2% of 100 is 5
10% of 100 is 10
10 + 5 = 15

Shahriar knows that the size of a computer monitor is based on the lenght of the diagonal on the screen. He thinks that the diagonal is not as large as the ad says. Is he correct? Explain.

a squared+b squared = c squared

25 square+3o squared = c squared

(25x25)+(30x30) = c squared

625+900=

1525= c squared

He is correct because the right lenght is 39 cm.

Owen's Pay it Forward

Pay it Forward

___________________________________________________

Part 1

The movie "Pay it Forward" really meant something to me a lot because it inspired me to wash the dishes every second night and clean my room every Saturday. This movie will teach a lot of things that is good for you and for others around you. Anyone could make a little difference on the world and the people in it.

__________________________________________________

Part 2

My Pay it Forward act of kindness was washing the dishes every second night of the week and cleaning my room every Saturday. I did it because it is the only thing I could do for my parents. I started to do my act of kindness two weks ago.

__________________________________________________

Part 3

My act of kindness went great. I felt great and happy of the things I have done for the last two and a half weeks. My parent reacted with a smile on their faces. I did'nt ask them to pay it forward because I did'nt have to.

___________________________________________________
Part 4

The idea of " Pay it Forward " is important because it teaches us how to do things that are good for us and it also teaches us about the world around us. I think my act of kindness did'nt really made a difference on the world around me.

How I stopped an alien invasion using proportions

It was a warm bad summer day in the year 2020 and the some of the most dangerous aliens were planning to invade the whole Earth by firing a SUPER laser at Earth unless we answer 3 proportional questions.

The questions are:

Delia was paid $35 for 5hours of babysitting. How much should she recieve for 3 hours? use a unit rate to find the answer.

Delia will recieve $21 in 3 hours.

David can saw alog into 3 pieces in 7 minutes. If he continous sawing at a constant
rate. how long would it take him to saw a similar log into 6 pieces?

A small gear turns 18 times in the same time a large gear turns 4 times. How many times will the large gear turn if the small gear turns 54 times? Draw a diagram to help set up a proportion
and solve the problem.

My BOB & Ratio

For homework for today we had to pick one picture and write different kinds of ratios about it.

Ratios:

part ratio = Part to part

3 part ratio = Part to part to part;">Part to total = part to total

2 part ratios:

Blue to Green

1 to 6

Green to Yellow

6 to 4

Blue to Yellow

1 to 4

Part to total ratios:

Blue to total

1 to 17

Yellow to total

3 to 17

Green to total

6 to 17

3 part ratios:

Blue to Yellow to Green

1 to 8 to 6

Green to Blue to Yellow

6 to 1 to 6

Blue to Red to Green

1 to 6 to 6

The ratio that I am going to do is....

Blue to Yellow

1 : 4

B/Y =1/4

0.25

25%

My questions are.....

What would be the ratio of Yellow to Blue to total?

What would be the ratio of Green to Purple?

What would be the ratio of Yellow, Red, Blue to total?

BOB part 2

What were the mistakes you made on your test. Show examples of answers that were wrong. What was your mistake. How will you remember what to do in future tests.

Some mistakes I made was I did'nt read the questions well enough.

The next time I do a math test I am going to read the question more carfeully, remember to study more Math.

Rewrite 2 questions that gave you difficulty with different numbers.

1)A rapid transit has 17 passengers on it as it starts to run. At the first stop 5 passengers get off and 31 passengers get on. What is the ratio of the number of passengers who were on the train as it arrived in the station to the number who were on the train when it left the station? Express your answer in the lowest terms.

2)Four students are running for student council president. Of 70 students polled, 38 chose Mike, 6 chose Patricia, 14 chose Brian, and the rest chose Karen. What is the ratio of votes for girls to votes for boys in the student council election? Express the ratio in lowest terms.

Owen's question for oct. 18, 09

Question # 16

Write the ratio of the lenght of A'B' compared to the lenght of AB

The ratio of the lenght of A'B' is.....

1:2 or 1 to 2

Write the ratio of the length of A' C' compared to the length of A'C'

The ratio of the length of A' C' is....

1:2 or 1 to 2

Use your knowledge of ratio and percent to explain the meaning of a 50% reduction

because each lenght is 1/2 of what it originally was.

In class we are suppose to define the different kinds of ratios:
  • Two term ratio
  • Three term ratio
  • Part to part ratio
  • Part to whole

Two term ratio-A ratio is a comparison between two quantities of the same kind.

Ex. a:b or a to b

Three term ratio-use to compare quantities of the same kind.

Ex. A:B:C or A to B to C

Part to part ratio-compares different parts of a group together

Ex. a/b or a:b

Part to whole ratio-compares one part of the whole

Owen's scribe for oct. 13, 2009

Would the jar look the same if the jar is canadian?

No because there would be more different types of coins in the jar and more colours.

What is the value of each type of coins in the jar?

Penny= 1 cent Nickel= 5 cents Dime= 10 cents

Quarter= 25 cents
Coin Math part 2
1.
A. Combination of USA coin in the jar
1 cent = 80 rolls
5 cents = 10 rolls
10 cents = 4 rolls
25 cents = 2 rolls
B. Make a 100.
40 rolls of pennies=$20.00
20 rolls of nickels=$40.00
8 rolls of dimes=$40.00
=$100.
2.How full is the Canadian jar?
I think the Canadian jar will be more full than the American jar because there is more types of coins in Canada

Owen's scribepost for oct. 6, 2009

This scribe is about the different graphs I know.

Graphs I know:

Line graph
Bar graph
Circle graph
Double bar graph

Double bar graph- A double bar graph is kind of like a bar graph.Double bar graphs is usually used for comparing two people and putting their improvement with 2 bars

Bar graph-A bar graph shows information on two axis. The bars are used to measure how popular the category is. When a bar is really tall than the other onse it means that it is more popular than the others, and you also have to put label on the X axis and the Y axis.

Line graph-A line graph can increase and decrease rating, monitor heart rate, and a line graph is kind of like a bar graph because they both have 2 axis.
How I can improve: I will improve on coloring the graphs.
Please leave a comment!

The four 4's

These two equations are the same because they have the same answer.

They are different because there was a line between the 4's in the first equation and the second one doesn't
