Noelle Cuvos' 2 Minutes To Make A Difference

Google Doc

Version 1

Final Cut

The comments that were received were very helpful. My group and I were pointed out that we had a few grammar mistakes, we studderred and we also did not include an interview. We made changes to our final copy by doing over most of our voice parts over again. Also we included a well brought up point by David Suzuki.

We found our expert by lots of searching and a lot of emails. A couple important points made by our expert -David Suzuki- was that it's never too late to make a difference, but if we don't do anything soon, then it might actually be too late. He said that we can help our earth, but we can't get rid of what already has infected our ozone layer. Also he pointed out to us in the original email that there are many scientists that are looking for ways to stop this problem, and to reduce it bit by bit.

My group and I never really found David Suzuki's email, but we did find a person who did interview David in person. We then asked the interviewer if we could use part of his interview. We did have an actual expert that we did have an email for, but we didn't have a response until a couple days after the due date.

One of the biggest things I will take away from this project to use in my future was probably all the work I had to do, all in very little time. Another thing I could reuse is staying organized and trying to steady my group to make sure they all had their own duties to fulfill.

My biggest frustration through the whole movie making process, would probably having to be making continuous changes with our video. I think it would've been much easier if my group could always be with me as I work on it so i can tell them about my ideas in stead of just changing it , then having them seeing it and not liking it. Also converting my files; the audio and video files. What I did was I simply just made sure I knew what my group wanted that I also approved of before I made the change. Also I made sure I knew what I was converting before I did it so that I wouldn't have to go back and redo the conversion.

I personally think that this project is important for our grade eight students, because I think that it's at this age, we start to realize what's is happening around the world and that things are changing too fast in bad ways. It opens our eyes and makes us aware and gives us advice on what to do about all the stuff happening around us, from poverty in Africa, to pollution in Indonesia. From animal abuse in Denmark, to child abuse in India. All this can be reduced with all our help,

I can't promise I will make any big differences, but in my two minutes video my group and I shared about fifteen easy ways you can reduce global warming everyday. By doing those little things, I know that I will be easily helping my community, city, country and my world.

Thank you.

noelle cuvos' Growing Post

MY GROWING POST !

Rectangular Prism
To find the TSA (Total Surface Area) of a rectangular prism, you can start by find the area of the front view, side view and the top view. In order to do this you must use the formula l x w = area of a square. Then add the sum of the 3 views' area and multiply by 2 (the opposite sides of each view) with this formula, TSA = (Top + Side + Front) x 2

Triangular Prism
To find the TSA of a triangular prism you can start by drawing a net. Then you can find the area of all the 5 faces by using the formula b x h / 2 = area of a triangle. Then calculate all the faces together to get the total surface area.

Cylinder
To find the TSA of a cylinder you must start by finding the surface area of 1 of the 2 circles then multiplying that by 2 for each circle. To find the area of a cirlce you must have the radius. Once you have it you use the formula A = pi x R x R. Then multiply it by two for the area of both circles. Then to find the area of the rectangle you use the formula l x w, but to find the length you need the circumference of the circle because they are equal. to find the circumference you can use the formula C= D x pi. If you already have the Radius you can multiply that radius by 2 to get the diameter. After all this, you'll have the area of both circles and the rectangle, then you must simply add the 2 areas together.

Noelle Cuvos's Percent Scribepost

Hey Guys and Girls, for scribe today all we had to do was show 3 questions from class today.

Question 4 (page 148)
Chris purchased the following items:
2 Binders for $4.99 each
1 math set for $3.99
a backpack for $19.99
find the toal cost inculding 5% GST and 7% PST.
So i started by adding all the subtotals together

$4.99+$4.99+$3.99+$19.99= $33.96
5%+7%= 12%

$33.96x 1.12= $38.04

Question 4 (page 150)
How many hundred grids are needed to show each of the following percents?
A) 101% = 2 hundred grids
B) 589% = 6 hundred grids
C) 1450% = 15 hundred grids

Question 10
What is the cost for four tires that sell for 85$ each, plus 5% GST and a 1.5 environmental tax?

first I found the total of 4 tires, which is $340.
Then I found the taxes by doing this:
$340 x 1.065 = ?
I used a calculator and got ...
$362.10 !

I hope you liked my scribe, I know the work isnt the greatest, but i try. Please leave a comment and i might do the same to you ! PEACE .

Noelle's Scribepost for Jan 5

YO, whats up guys. I'm supposed to do question number 15. Here was the question.
(no pictures, sorry)

the coordinate grid shown was drawn on centimetre grid paper. What is the length of line segment AB? Express your answer to the nearest tenth of a centimeter.

We have to find the length of a diagonal line on centimeter grid paper. In order to get from one point to the other point, you have to go up 4 squares and over 2 squares. So the length of the line is approximately 6 squares, because 4+2=6.

I know it's complicated without pictures, but there's my work.

Noelle Cuvos's Scribepost For December 8th

Hey Guys I'm one of the few scribers for today, and I was chosen to do 3 questions on page 85. The 3 questions were questions number 15, 16 and 23.

Question 15
Evaluate:
square root of:
a)49=7
b)64=8
c)652=25.2

To get all those answers, I simply used my calculator.

Question 16
Evaluate:
Square root of:
a)9=3
b)25=5
c)1600=40

Again to get those answers, I used my calculator.

Question 23
A helicopter landing pad has a square shape. The area is 400m squared. Use Prime factorization to fine the side length of the pad.

400
=200 x 2
=100 x 2 x 2
=50 x 2 x 2 x 2
=25 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2
=5 x 5 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2
400 = (5x2x2) x (5x2x2)
400 = 20 x 20
400 = 20 squared

Simple sentence : The landing pad has a side length of 20 meters.

Noelle Cuvos's Pay It Forward

PART 1
I Think that this movie was trying to show that life is too short to enjoy by yourself. You have to help and make people feel good. It also shows that no matter how bad your life is, you have to put others before yourself. Trevor was tortured by his mom's bad decisions, but still tried t help people he barely knew. He then helped his mother before choosing to help himself. Closer to the end of the movie he sacrificed his life to end the bullying towards his close friend.

PART 2
-My group's act of kindness was to donate clothes at The Salvation Army, then afterwards to hand out hand made cards to random people we don't know at Polo Park Shopping Center.

-My group chose these activities, because we liked the idea of handing out cards from previous years, and we thought about people at Salvation Army who would love to have our older clothes that are now out of use.

-We basically helped the people from Salvation Army, and everyone at Polo Park we didn't really help them, but I'm sure we put a smile on all their faces.

-What we did was, first, gather together all of our clothes, then make all of our cards. Then the day of we donated the clothes and gave out the cards.

-We did our act of kindness during the evening around 6 o'clock, because we could donate the clothes any time, but we thought about Polo Park. It would probably be most busy around that time.

PART 3:

-Our acts of kindness went very well. The girl at the Salvation Army counter looked very happy that we gave them so many clothes. Also we handed out all our cards in just under 2 hours.

-What happened was we simply would walk up to who ever and would just give them a card.

-Personally, I felt good. Usually I would have never have done this if it wasn't for school. People would always talk about what a good feeling it is to have, but I honestly never thought it would be that great.

-The girl at the Salvation Army looked so happy, and when ever we would hand a card to someone their face would light up within a few seconds.

-We didn't ask people to Pay It Forward because most people didn't take it too seriously. Most people thought of it more as a Holiday Greetings as aposed to a good deed.

-Most people reacted positivly by wishing us happy holidays aswell and by thanking us, but a lot of other people would say no thank you and just walk away.

-We didn't tell them to Pay It Forward because most people didn't take these cards seriously and they probably wouldn't Pay It Forward anyways just because we're a bunch of kids.

PART 4:

-The idea of this all is very important because people have to stop being so selfish and think about others who need so much more then them. Some kids are frustrated when their parents say to work for something, when there are some kids who have to work hard to just have one meal a day. So many people are struggling with their lives and people are looking past it like it's nothing, but truly it's affecting a lot of people all over the world.

-I hope that my group's act of kindness made a difference. Hopefully it opened up someone's eyes and that person might think about it and actually Pay It Forward without being asked, but with some of the shallow people that we live with it might not occur to them that this is actually something we did to try and change the world in a way.

How i faught off aliens with knowledge of proportion

It all started when i woke up on saturday morning. I woke up to find an aliens UFO space shuttle on my front lawn. As i approached it, two small green human like aliens walked down the steps of the devious space machine. They told me that I, aswell as earth were doomed and threatened by these aliens. They said that they will spare us if they were taught some proportional knowledge. So I ran up to my bedroom and grabbed my math textbook and ran back outside.

I opened up my book to the chapter of proportion. I then pointed out one question that i wanted to show them, That question was :

What is the unit rate in two pens that cost 94 cents ?

This is how i answered it, I made a ratio table. The two aliens didn't seem too familier with the term ratio table. So i told them that it is a diagram that you can use to find a unit rate. Here is my table:

.Cents..Pens
--------------
......94..2
...../.........\
/2.........../2
.....\........./
......47..1

Do you see the ratio table ?
Good.

They still seemed a bit confused so then I desided to do a couple more questions, Another question I thought doing was this question :

A small gear turns 18 times in the same time that a large gear turns 4 times. How many times will the large gear turn if the small gear turns 54 times? Draw a diagram to help set up a proportion and solve the problem.

So this is how I answered it, The questions says to make a diagram, and my choice of diagram was a ratio table:

Small...Large
--------------
.......18..4
...../.........\
x3...........x3
.....\........./
.......54.12

One of the two aliens began to understand the concept of the ratio table, but the other was a little bit still unsure. So I decided to do another ratio table type of question just for him. That question was :

Two quarters has the same value as ten nickels.
What is the values of five quarters in nickels?

My ratio table looked like this :

NickelsQuarters
--------------
.......10.2.
...../.........\
/2.........../2
.....\........./
.......5.....1

...../.........\
x5...........x5
.....\........./
.......25...5

Both aliens then understood the concept of proportion and also learnt how to use a ratio table, and went away without doing any harm to our planet. And thats how i saved the earth from mass destruction from aliens with my mathematical knowledge. (your welcome)

THEE ENDD !

noellecuvos's %%%%%'s Rate Growing Post

Define..

Ratio
is comparing 2 different quantities measured in the same units.

Rate is comparing 2 different quantities measured in different units.

Ratio and Rate are different because, rate compares different units and ratio compares the same units.

Page 60 question 5:
What is the unit rate in each ?

a) A blue whale eats 8 tons of krill in 2 days.

b) The cruising speed of a blue whale allows it to travel 193Km in 10 hours.

c) A bull moose bellows 15 times in 2 1/2 hours.

...a)
8/2=4
2/2=1

4T/1 day

...b)
193/10=19.3
10/10=1

19.3Km/1 h

...c)
2 1/2 hours=150 minutes
150/15=10
15/15=1

1 bellow/ 10 minutes

Page 61 Question 10:
Trevor rode his mountain bike 84 km in 3 hours. Jillian rode 70 km in 2.5 hours. Who is the fastest cyclist ? How do you know ?

Both Trevor and Jillian have the same speed while riding their bikes. I made a ratio table for Trevor so I divided 3 by 3 to get 1 hour, and so I did the same to 84. 84/3= 28. That makes it 28Km/hour. I also made a ratio table for Jillian so I divided 2.5 hours by 2.5 to get 1 hour, so I did it to the other side as well, 70/2.5=28. That makes it 28Km/hour.

Both speeds are the same.

~PART 2~

Hey guys, the blog for today was to take the spaghetti sauce recipe for 4 people and make the recipe enough for 10 people, and again for only 1 person.

10 PEOPLE
In order to get enough for 10 people you would have to multiply the recipe by 2 1/2.

RECIPE FOR 10:
1 1/4 lb ground beef

Noelle's BOB2 ratio

Hello Everybody,

One question that i got wrong with the test, was question number 4.

The question is :
Four students are runninh for student council president. Of 30 Students polled, 15 chose Mike, 3 chose Patricia, 6 chose Brian, and the rest chose karen. what is the ratio of votes for girls to votes for boys in the student council election? express the ratio in lowest terms.

The answer was choice a, but i chose b.
The reason i got that wrong was because i switched the ratio. The correct answer was 3:7 and I chose 7:3.

The next question was:
Question number 5

Eric is able to stop 85% of the shots on goal. If he faces 27 shots on goal, how many goals would likely be scored on him?

The correct answer was option b which was 4, but the answer i put was option c which was 9.

PLEASE COMMENT, BLAH.

Noelle's Ratio BOB Blog Post

Greetings Everybody,
This is my BOB post for the day about ratios.

[I had difficulties putting the pictures, but the picture i was going to select was the pictures with the m&ms.]

Now the next thing I will do is to show you three part to part ratios with the written ratio witch is needed:

Red to Green = 7 : 6

Green to Blue = 6 : 1

Blue to yellow = 1 : 6

My next step is to now show you two part to total ratios also with the word ratio to clearify my work:

Red to Total = 7 : 20

Blue to Total= 1 : 20

Now I will demonstrate two 3 part ratios, also with the word ratios:
[NOTE: Word ratios are important because you know what you are comparing.]

Green to Blue to Yellow = 6 : 1 : 6

Red to Blue to Total = 7 : 1 : 20

One of the ratios i chose was 7 : 20 which was a ratio of the red m&ms to the toal. One thing you can do to the ratio is change it into a fraction, which is easy in this case, all you have to do is flip the ratio sideways so that it is 7 over 20 or 7/20. Another form you can write this in is a percent, what you can do to make a percent is, turn 20 into 100 by multiplying it by 5, and what you do to 20, you'll have to do it to 7 aswell, and 7 multiplied by 5 is 35. Then you would get another fraction which is 35 over 100 or 35/100; also shown as 35%. Percents are then easily converted to decimals, just put a decimal point in front of it, making it 0.35.

Another thing you can do is make an equivalent ratio, all you would have to do it double the ratio on both sides. From 7:20 into 14:40. Simple.

My 3 comment questions are:

1. Would it make a big difference if the amounts all doubled ? Why or why not ?

2. Would all the ratios be easy to convert to a fraction, percent, and decimals ?

3. Can you split the ratios? Why or why not ?

Hope you learnt something and i hope you liked my post !

Noelle's Scribepost for October 15, 2009.

Hello everybody!

Today during our lesson, we learnt more about ratios, and different kinds. We learnt about two-term ratios, three-term ratios, part-to-part ratios, part-to-whole ratios, and even many different ways of showing each ratio. Some examples are in word ratios, number ratios, in fractions, decimals, and even percents.

This scribepost is particularly for this one specific question:

Example 2: Apply Ratios
Tamara has a recipe for fruit punch that calls for three cans of frozen
orange juice concentrate, two cans of raspberry juice concentrate, and
one can of lime juice concentrate. For each can of juice concentrate, the
directions say to add three cans of water. All the cans are the same size.
Tamara makes one recipe of fruit punch.
NOTE: Each can of juice concentrate needs to be mixed with three seperate cans of water.
a) Copy and complete the following chart.

---FLAVOR------CONCENTRATE------------WATER/CONCENTRATE---TOTAL CANS

---ORANGE-----------------3---------------------3x3(water)=-----------------------9

---RASBERRY---------------2----------------------2x3(water)=---------------------6

---LIME-----------------------1--------------------1x3(water)=-----------------------3

TOTAL CONCENTRATE----6--------------TOTAL CANS OF WATER--------------18

GRAND TOTAL OF CANS:24 cans of concentrate and water.

b) What is the ratio of orange juice to lime juice concentrate?
Express the ratio two different ways.

First ratio has to be in a word ratio. The word ratio can easily be located in the question, in this question it's clearly orange juice to lime juice.
Secondly, the next ratio can be the easiest, a simple part-to-part number ratio.

c) What is the ratio of lime to orange to raspberry juice concentrate?
Again, you have to find the word ratio which in this question is, lime to orange to rasberry. Now the three-term ratio according to the graph is 3:9:6.

d) What is the ratio of water to juice concentrate?
The word ratio here is water to juice. Then the number ratio would be 18:6 or can simplified as small as 3:1.

e) How many cans of punch does the recipe make?
The recipe makes a grand total of 24 cans in the end.

f) What is the ratio of orange, raspberry, and lime juice concentrate to
total punch? Express the ratio as a fraction, a decimal, and a percent.

Word ratio in this question is orange, raspberry, and lime juice concentrate to
total juice. The first ratio we find is a part-to-part ratio, nice and simple. It's 6:24, this ratio can be simplified to as small as 1:4. As a fraction we know that it would be one over four, or 1/4. As a decimal it's simply 0.25. As a percent is 25%.

That's all for now , thanks for reading my scribe, I hope you all learned something a different way, please please please COMMENT.

p.s.
big ups to april for helping me with this post.

Noelle's BOB post October 13, 2009

Hello Everybody,

Here are three things i know about graphing:

1. I know that line graphs show data in a short and/or long period of time.

2. I know that a double line graph compares two things over a short and/or long period of time.

3. I know that there are six different graphs all to show different things better in their own way. Double Bar Graph , Double Line Graph , Bar Graph , Line Graph , Pictograph and circle graph.

Noelle's Coin Math October 13, 2009

Hello everybody,

First I will talk about my estimate to how much money is in the jar.
Compared to my estimate the difference from my estimate to the exact amount was a difference of $58.

ESTIMATE=$100 American
ANSWER=$158 American
DIFFERENCE=$58

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

HOW MANY COINS ARE IN THE JAR?
AMERICAN JAR

Money Rolls Value

Pennies 1 cent 2X4=8 $1

Nickels 5 cents 2X4=8 $4

Dimes 10 cents 2X4=8 $10

Quarters 25 cents 1X4=4 $10
28 ROLLS $25 =$100

Redone Table

MONEY ROLLS COINS IN ROLL TOTAL

1 cent 8 50 400

5 cents 8 40 320

10 cents 8 50 400

25 cents 4 40 160

REDONE- Means it's more exact.

MONEY ROLLS VALUE

1 cent 2 $1

5 cents 2 $4

10 cents 2 $10

25 cents 2 $10

1 dollar 1 $25

2 dollar 1 $50

MONEY ROLLS COINS/ROLLS TOTAL

1 cent 2 50/ 2 ROLLS $1

5 cents 2 40/ 2 ROLLS $4

10 cents 2 50/ 2 ROLLS $10

25 cents 2 40/ 2 ROLLS $10

1 dollar 1 25/ 1 ROLL $25

2 dollar 1 25/ 1 ROLL $50

370 TOTAL COINS

Now my conclusion says that there are 370 coins in the Canadian Jar.

noeLLeCuvos Scribepost Question 13 October

My scribepost is about question #13. I will be showing you my way and how I got the answer with the best description posible.

(NOTE: I can not apply pictures to this scribepost at the moment so bare with me as I try to explain with my best description.)

The question is states:
13. a) The two circle graphs are meant to represent the same information. Does it appear that way? Explain.
The graphs share the same data, but shown with different pieces. The correct graph would have to be graph B, because the percent and the piece sizes are the same, as apposed to graph A the pieces are distorted from the actual percent.

b)Identify the errors in Graph A.
Graph A can be appeared as an incorrect graph fore the pieces are not formed properly and the size and percents don't match up. One example is the A piece and the C piece are said to have the same percent, but the sizes are way off. Another example is piece B has a percent that is smaller than A and C, but the piece is bigger than C. And the biggest error is piece D, because the shape of the piece is equal to one half, but the said percent is 35%.
