Binesi's 2minutes to make a Difference reflection

Our project's first draft needed a lot of work. The suggestions we got from our peer assessment really helped with our decisions. Most of our voice overs were really quiet so we had to spend a lot of time fixing that. We didn't like our music so we used my brothers music collaboration CD that had a lot of up and coming artists featured on it. I think we did that just to be sure our music wasn't the same as everyone else's.

Candace was our expert, (the girl running across Canada) and she was very open and sincere when she answered our questions. Lucky for us she was responding from her fan email and wasn't slow when it came to getting back to us, even though she was running all day. The 3 most important answers she gave us were probably this:
What are your thoughts on Canada being the child poverty capital of Canada?
its a shame when i see little children in a soup line asking for food, there is no reason for that at all, canada is ranked 3rd in the world for riches and yet we live in a poor lifestyle.45.000 children in wpg use the foodbank every month

Do you ever doubt that you'll finish your run?
it has never crossed my mind,if i thought about giving up then the run is for nothing..i want the youth to know we cant give up on things that seem hard in life or else your gonna be a failure and life will be hard because we gave up,so kids never ever give up no matter what people say.

This was what she put at the end of the email:
i want to tell the children that no matter how hard life is please stay away from gangs..stay away from drugs..these are very very bad things and they will make your life bad and all its going to do to you is be a bad person..

I learned that what ever you do, do it with pride and with reason. What I think she gave to this movie was a human face. You can tell your audience all of the facts, but you can't just expect people to make a difference without a real role model.

I'd have to say the biggest and most useful skill I picked up was learning how to use a Mac. Just like Harbeck said: "It's like learning a different language."
Other than that, the whole learning how to put equal efforts into a group project was something very important I picked up. I was really stressed out when it came to when I had to organize the garage sale. I didn't know whether I should just trust my group members to deal with the technology stuff that I didn't know how to do, or get mad at them for not making posters fast enough. In the end I did what I was strongest at (organizing and planning) and they acted as my crutches the whole way. I was their little student when we had to put all the effects on the video. I'm pretty sure I wasn't a technology person before the project, but now I know my fair share.

My 2 biggest problems with this project were the slides and the pictures. Their isn't exactly a lot of pictures of Candace Sutherland on Flickr creative commons now is there? So I contacted her and got permission to use the pictures from her website. The only other huge trouble I got into was my research slides. I didn't think I should waste my time on petty statistics for all my slides. So I spent 3 hours figuring out how much it would cost to live for a month in Winnipeg. That was very time consuming, but worth it.

We are at a very impressionable age right now, convince us to be good people before our minds go straight to hell. Pardon my French, but it's true and if no one's going to say it I will. I doubt we'd do something quite this time consuming on both the teacher's and student's behalf at another school. Then again other school's aren't as creative as Sargent Park. I don't think any of us would have developed any character at all without this project, at least not so early on in life. We all need to learn to be good people at some point in our lives, you just taught us to be good people earlier than expected.

I will keep supporting Candace Sutherland with her vision4hope. I don't want to just stop even after we get a grade for this project. 2 minutes to make a difference has just put me in motion for what I can actually accomplish. I just want to keep helping out anyway I can.

Binesi's Scribepost for February 1 2010

For our foldable we had to copy down the key ideas:

Percents can be combined by adding to solve problems. 5% + 7% = 12%

- To calculate the increase in a number,

-You can add the combined percent
amount to the original number.
12% of 100 = 0.12 × 100 = 12
100 + 12 = 112

-You can multiply the original number
by a single percent greater than 100.
112% of 100 = 1.12 × 100
= 112

- Percents of percents can be used to determine amounts that result from
consecutive percent increases or decreases.

Then we had to do the 2 show you know questions on our foldables.

A backpack costs $35. Use the method of your choice to find the
total cost of the backpack if GST is 5% and PST is 6%. Use another
method to check your work.
First you have to add the taxes together (5+6=11)
Percent-100/100=1
Dollars- 35/100=0.35
Percent- 1x11=11
Dollars- 0.35x11=3.85
Then all you have to do is add $3.85 to $35 to get $38.85

The second way I did this was: 1.11x35=38.85

The second show you know:

What is the final sale price at each store? Which is a better buy?
Explain your thinking.
Store A: 50% off one day only
Store B: 25% off one day followed by 25% off the reduced price the
second day

I'm pretty sure you use the $200 hockey mask example.
Store A
Percent-100/2=50
Dollars- 200/2=100

Store B 1st day
Percent-100/4=25
Dollars- 200/4=50

Store B 2nd day
0.25x50=12.50
50-12.50=37.50
37.50+200=237.50

I don't know if I'm right, so correct me if I'm wrong.

The question I chose to do is number 4 from page 110.

You want to find out the height of the pole where the guy wire is attached, to the nearest tenth of a meter.

The triangle isn't labeled as A,B,or C, my mistake.

c²-b²=a²
10²-2²=a²
(10x10)-(2x2)=a²
100-4=a²
96=a²
√96=√a²
9.8=a

Binesi's Pay it Forward

Pay it Forward

Part 1
Pay it forward is a movie about a young boy named Trevor who wants to make a difference. He brings homeless people into his home, tries to help his teacher find love, and get rid of his mother's alcoholism. He really does make his mark on the world, but like every great human being, he must die. While trying to rescue his friend from a group of bullies he is then stabbed. After the world hears of his dead (through a news report), his idea of "Paying it Forward" is thrust upon the rest of civilization to fulfill. Random acts of Kindness are reported all overart 1
America is reported. He may not have solved the world's problems, he did change a few lives along the way.

Part 2
My group (Elaine, Mary Jane, Faye, and I) decided we would sell bracelets. We weren't sure what the money should go towards until we came upon a Gift of Hope catalogue. We were leafing through when we came across a certain gift. I looked at it, it was to get a whole entire community in Africa immunized against polio. What's polio? You might be wondering, it is a disease that attacks your nervous system. We sold the bracelets at the book fair on Thursday night and all day Friday.

Part 3

We were really nervous at first, I guess the thought of no one buying anything was on all of our minds (considering afterwards we all took a deep sigh of relief). It was very succesful and we raised over $175. The extra money we put into the Pennies from Heaven jar at school. We were very successful in the end and people's reactions weren't all that amazing. Although one woman bought an extra one claiming to her impatient husband that the money went towards charity. We didn't really ask anyone to Pay it forward because we had a sign that said so. I think they sort of already did pay it forward by buying the bracelets in the first place.

Part 4

The concept of "Paying it Forward" is very important. It teaches both young and old that random acts of kindness help to mould our society into a better place. I really do think that our act of kindness is making a difference. I was in disbelief that only $175 about the amount of a week's grocceries, could make such a difference. I really hope that our vaccinations help a few families in poverty stay healthy.

Thank you to Sharmaine and Jerick Reyes who were there all Friday. As well as Noelle Cuvos who came for almost all of Friday. Carla Lacson for the pictures and all the teachers who bought a lot of our bracelets.

Pay it forward!

How I stopped an Alien Invasion using Proportion

I was captured by aliens. They were boring. Then told me to do 3 proportion problems or they'd blow up earth. With nothing better to do I just did what they told me.

Two quarters have the same value as ten nickels. What is the value of five quarters in nickels?
There are 25 nickels for every 5 quarters.

The next question they asked me was this:

At an amusement park, a new thrill ride was introduced. It costs $7.50 for 3 rides on the Wild Slider.
a) What is the Wild Slider’s unit rate per ride?

rides/$ 3/7.50 3/3=1 7.50/3=2.50 $2.50/per ride

b) At this rate, what would it cost for 18 rides on Wild Slider?Determine the answer two different ways.

rides/$ (take the unit rate) 1/2.50 1x18=18 2.50x18=45
It costs 45 dollars for 18 rides.

The second way I did this was starting from just 7.50 for 3 rides.

3/7.50 3x6=18 7.50x6=45 it's almost the same thing, just a little different.

The third problem they gave me to solve was this:

David can saw a log into three pieces in 7 min. If he continues sawing at a constant rate, how long will it take him to saw a similar log into six pieces?

Logs & pieces/minutes 3/7 3x2=6 7x2=14 6/14
It will take 14 minutes to saw a log into 6 pieces.

They just left not saying anything. I found out later that they had been a hallucination because of a new medication I had been prescribed, I was sort of disappointed.

Binesi's Rate Growing Post

Page 60 question 7
The table shows the price of different-sized
packages of mixed nuts.
a) What is the unit price per 100 g for each package?

300/3=100 2.19/3=$0.73
500/5=100 3.09/5=$0.62
700/7=100 4.83/7=$0.69

b) Which package is the best buy? Explain your choice.
The 500g package costs the least per 100g.

Page 61 Question 11
Shannon buys 12 granola bars for $9.96.
a) Determine the price per bar. Give your answer in dollars and cents.
12/12=1 9.96/12=0.83
b) Explain whether your answer in part a)is a ratio or a rate.
It's a rate because we're comparing 2 things with different units of measurement

Definitions:
Ratio-a way to compare 2 quantities, sort of like a fraction but only sideways example: (a word ratio) pears to apples (a regular number ratio) 1:3
there are many ways to compare different numbers in a ratio (part to part to part, part to whole, etc.)
Rate- when you compare 2 things in different units. example: $12/per hour

Coin Math Question:
If there were 370 coins in the Canadian currency jar and they were evenly divided within 5 jars, what would be the rate of coins per jar?

370/5=74 74/per jar

Ingredients for Spaghetti Sauce:
1/2 lb ground beef
1 medium onion diced
1 celery finely sliced
1 clove garlic

1 tsp parsley
1 1/2 tsp basil
1 tsp oregano
1 tsp sugar
1/2 tsp Worchestershire sauce
1/2 tsp seasoning salt
1 bay leaf

This Recipe serves 4 people

A)Rewrite the recipe so that it serves 10 people.
a)Multiply everything by 2.5,
1/2 lb ground beef-1 1/4 lb ground beef
1 medium onion diced-2 and 1/2 of diced onion
1 celery finely sliced-2 and 1/2 finely sliced celery
1 clove garlic-2 and 1/2 clove garlic
14 oz can of tomatoes chopped-35 oz can of tomatoes chopped
1/2 can of tomato paste-1 and 1/4 can of tomato paste
1 tsp parsley-2 and 1/2 tsp parsley
1 1/2 tsp basil-3 and 3/4 tsp basil
1 tsp oregano-2 and 1/2 tsp parsley
1 tsp sugar-2 and 1/2 tsp parsley
1/2 tsp Worchestershire sauce-1 and 1/4 tsp Worchestershire sauce
1/2 tsp seasoning salt-1 and 1/4 tsp seasoning salt
1 bay leaf-2 and 1/2 of bay leaf

B)Rewrite the recipe to feed 1 person.
b)I used just divided the original recipe by 4 to get my answer.
1/2 lb ground beef-1/8 lb ground beef

Binesi's BOB & Ratio

Part to Part Ratios
Green to Blue=6:1
Yellow to Green=4:6
Red to Blue=6:1

Part to Total Ratios
Green to Total=6:17
Blue to Total=1:17

Three Part Ratios
Green to Blue to Yellow=6:1:4
Blue to Red to Green=1:6:6

Questions:
Write an fraction for 8:3, then create 3 equivalent fractions for it.

Write a decimal for 6:17, then convert this to a percent.

Write simplified versions for 10:30, 49:70. Then turn them both into decimals, then into percents.

BOB Part 2
Here is the answer to one of the many question I got wrong:
17.Use the data in the table below to determine which sports teams have equivalent scored by to scored against ratios.
Baseball Team A- Scored by:10 Scored against:8
Basketball Team A- Scored by:115 Scored against:92
Hockey Team A- Scored by:6 Scored against:4
You need to turn the scores into ratios, then into decimals. I didn't turn them into decimals, which is why I got 0 as my mark for that question.
When you turn them all into decimals you get baseball-1.25, basketball team-1.25, and hockey-1.5.
So the equivalent scores are baseball and basketball.
I will remember how to do this type of question for a future test because, I will know that 2 answers will be equal.

Two Questions that gave me difficulty are. . .
8. A picture frame has a width to length ratio of 10:14. If the width of the photo is 18cm, then the length of the photo is. .
a. 39.1cm b. 29.7cm c. 25.2cm d. 19cm
The width of the frame is 18cm while the length is unknown. To get this we must see what we multiplied by to get from 10 to 14.
When we multiply 1.4 by 10 we get 14, so if we multiply 18 by 1.4, what do we get?

6. A stable has 50 horses available for trail rides. Of these horses, 25 are all brown, 20 are mainly white, and the rest are black. Express in lowest terms the ratio of brown horses to mainly white horses to black horses.
a. 25:20:5 b. 5:4:1 c. 10:8:10 d. 50:25:20
What was your answer and why?

Scribepost for October 18th 2009 Question 22

A) Express the ratio of rise to run in lowest terms. This ratio describes the slope of the ramp.
3:12 (simplest terms) 3÷3=1 12÷3=4 1:4

B) Express the slope ratio as a fraction, a decimal, and a percent.

1/4 1÷4= 0.25 25x100%= 25%

C) Predict what effect each of the
following would have on the slope
of the ramp:
• increasing the rise
• decreasing the rise
• increasing the run
• decreasing the run

When you increase the rise you increase the slope.
When you decrease the rise you decrease the slope.
When you increase the run you decrease the slope.
When you decrease the run you increase the slope.

When you increase and decrease in rise, you're moving up and down on the y axis on a grid. When you increase or decrease the run, you're moving left and right on the x axis on a grid.

Binesi's Coin Math for October 11th 2009

Would the jar look the same if it was Canadian money?

No, because American currency is worth more than Canadian currency.
Right now the American dollar would exchange to $1.04 in Canadian currency. While the Canadian dollar in American is worth 0.96 cents. So if you changed the American currency to Canadian then you would have more in the jar. You would have $104.24 in Canadian.

What is the biggest coin?

The biggest coin is probably an American quarter. Although if you were talking about Canadian currency it would have to be the toonie. This goes for both size of coin and value of coin.

Part 2

If you were to add together all of the coins in this jar how many coins would you get?

For American money it could come up to around this:

1¢ (50¢ rolls) = $2 (4 rolls of pennies)
5¢ ($2 rolls) = $8 (4 rolls of nickels)
10¢ ($5 rolls) = $50 (10 rolls of dimes)
25¢ ($10 rolls)= $40 (4 rolls of quarters)

After all that we have to figure out how many coins are in the jar:

We take the number of coins in 1 roll then multiply it by the number of rolls we used.

1¢ has 50¢ worth of pennies in 1 roll, so we multiply that by the number of rolls used.
so. . .
50 x 4= 200
40 x 4= 160
50 x 10= 500
40 x 4= 160

The total number of coins in the American Jar is 1 020 coins.

If we redid this problem with Canadian coins we would have a lot less coins in the jar:

1¢ (50¢) = $1 (2 rolls)
5¢ ($2) = $4 (2 rolls)
10¢ ($5) = $10 (2 rolls)
25¢ ($10)= $10 (1 roll)
$1 ($25) = $25 (1 roll)
$2 ($50) = $50 (1 roll)

50 x 2 = 100
40 x 2 = 80
50 x 2 = 100
40 x 1 = 40
25 x 1 = 25
25 x 1 = 25

The total value of coins in the Canadian jar is 370 coins, a lot less than the American jar. So I think the Canadian jar would be about one quarter full.

Binesi8-17 BOB Oct.6 2009

BOB.
  1. There are many ways to misrepresent data. One way to misrepresent a bar graph is to make one bar really big, and a bright color.
  2. You can also make a pictograph. A way to misrepresent this to make on lines pictures really big.
  3. To misrepresent a circle graph you can write the percent in one section really big, as well as color it yellow and the other sections grey and other dull colors.
One thing I need to improve on is remembering my labels. That's how I lost marks on my assignment. We were making various graphs (including a bar graph) and I didn't remember to put any labels.

I'm sure there are many things I could work on with my graph making abilities but that is all I can think of right now.

Axis Break- a break in the y-axis that lets you jump from 1 number to another rather than a  continuous set of numbers.

 1. Explain how this graph could be misleading.
a) The axis break makes it look like gas prices decreased greatly. When it actually only decreased by 0.05 cents.
1. 2. What conclusion does the graph suggest about the price of gas at the end of the day compared with the price at the beginning of the day?
a) That gas prices made a big jump down in the evening from the morning.
2 3. Describe how to redraw the graph to represent the data more accurately.
b) When redrawing the graph, don’t use an axis break.

1. Explain how this graph could be misleading.
a) They made the pizza really big, so it looks like pizza is the most popular food.
2. What conclusion does the graph suggest about favourite lunch specials?
b) It’s suggesting that pizza is the most popular food, and that mac and cheese is second.
3. How could you redraw the graph to represent the data more accurately?
c) You could make every picture the same size.
