Brendan's Rate Growing Post

Part 1:

Ratio: Compares quantites measured in the same units

Rate: Compares two quantities measured in different units.

The difference between rate and ratio is ratio compares quantites in the same units and rate compares quantites measured in different units.

Page 60, 9. Mala is shopping for honey. Her favourite brand is available in two sizes.

a) Estimate which is the better buy. Show your thinking.

I think the 1000 mL jar is the better buy because $2.80 (the 250 mL price rounded) multiplied by 4 is $11.20.

b) Determine the better buy. Show your work.

The better buy is the 1000 mL jar because $9.59/10=0.959 and $2.79/2.5=1.116.

Page 61, 10. Trevor rode his mountain bike 84 km in 3 h. Jullian rode 70 km in 2.5 h. Who is the faster cyclist ? How do you know ?

They both ride their bike at 28 km/h. I know that because 84/3=28 and 70/2.5=28

Coin Rate Question: What is the rate for dollars per person if there are $100 and 25 people.

The rate for dollars per person if there are $100 and 25 people is $4/person.

I know that because $100/25 people = $4/1 person.

Part 2:

Ingredients for Spaghetti Sauce

1/2 lb ground beef
1 medium onion diced
1 Celery finely sliced
1 clove garlice
14 oz can of tomatoes chopped
1/2 can of tomato paste
1 tsp parsley
1 1/2 tsp basil
1 tsp oregano
1 tsp sugar
1/2 tsp Worchestershire Sauce
1/2 tsp seasoning salt
1 bay leaf

1) The recipe would look like this if it was supposed to serve 10 people:

1.25 lb ground beef
2.5 medium onion diced

2.5 Celery finely sliced
2.5 clove garlic
35 oz can of tomatoes chopped
1.25 can of tomato paste
2.5 tsp parsley
3.75 tsp basil
2.5 tsp oregano
2.5 tsp sugar
1.25 tsp Worchestershire Sauce
1.25 tsp seasoning salt
2.5 bay leaf

I know that the recipe would look like that because I know that 4x2.5=10 so i just multiplied everything by 2.5.

2) The recipe would look like this if it was meant to serve one person:

1/8 lb ground beef
1/4 medium onion diced
1/4 celery finely sliced
1/4 clove of garlic
3.5 oz can of tomatoes chopped
1/8 can of tomato paste
1/4 tsp of parsley
0.375 tsp of basil
1/4 tsp of oregano
1/4 tsp of sugar
1/8 tsp of Worchestershire Sauce
1/8 tsp of seasoning salt
1/4 bay leaf

I know that the recipe would look like that because I took the recipe for 10 people and divided everything by 10.

Ralphs %%%%%'s Rate Growing Post

Today we had to do part one of a two part post.

Define ratio

Ratio: Compares two things of the same quantity.

eg. 3:4 7:8

Rate: Compares two things measured in different units.

eg. heartbeats : seconds

Questions:

4. Determine the unit rate in each situation.
a) An orca swims 110 km in 2 h.

2h / 2 = 1h 110 km/2 = 60 km 60km/h

b) A Canada goose flies 800 km in 12.5 h.

12.5 h / 12.5 = 1 800/ 12.5 = 64 64km/h

c) Cathy plants 45 daffodils in 30 min.

30min x 2 = 1h 45daffodils x 2 = 90 daffodils 90 daff/ h

10. Trevor rode his mountain bike 84 km in
3 h. Jillian rode 70 km in 2.5 h. Who is
the faster cyclist? How do you know?

They are both going at the same speed because if you divide 84 by 3 you get 28 and if you divide 70 by 2.5 you still get 28.

Coin Question

If the jar was Canadian, worth 100$ and had 460 coins, what would be the unit rate for each dollar?

Answer:

$ Coins
_____________
$100 460 coins
/ 100
$1 4.6 coins rounded 5 coins

Part 2

I dont know why but, my image won't go on to my post so I'll just do the work anyway.

To find ingredients for 10, you need to multiply the recipe by 2.5. 4 x 2.5 = 10

Recipe for 10 people.

1 1/4 lb ground beef

2 1/2 medium onion diced

2 1/2 celery finely sliced

2 1/2 clove of garlic

35 oz can of tomatoes chopped

1 1/4 can of tomato paste

2 1/2 tsp parsley

3 3/4 tsp basil

2 1/2 tsp oregano

2 1/2 tsp sugar

1 1/4 tsp Worchestershire Sauce

1 1/4 tsp seasoning salt

2 1/2 bay leaf

You can get recipe for one by dividing all ingredients by 4.

Recipe for 1 person

1/8 lb ground beef

1/4 medium onion diced

1/4 celery finely sliced

1/4 clove of garlic

3.5 oz can of tomatoes chopped

1/8 can of tomato paste

1/4 tsp of parsley

7.5ml / 0.375 tsp of basil

1/4 tsp of oregano

1/4 tsp of sugar

1/8 tsp of Worchestershire Sauce

1/8 tsp of seasoning salt

1/4 bay leaf

Celdrick's Rate Growing Post

Ratio:A ratio is an expression that compares quantities relative to each other. The most common examples involve two quantities, but any number of quantities can be compared. Ratios are represented mathematically by separating each quantity with a colon – for example, the ratio 2:3, which is read as the ratio "two to three". The quantities separated by colons are sometimes called terms.

Rate:In mathematics, a rate is a ratio between two measurements, often with different units. If the unit or quantity in respect of which something is changing is not specified, usually the rate is per unit time. However, a rate of change can be specified per unit time, or per unit of length or mass or another quantity. The most common type of rate is "per unit time", such as speed, heart rate and flux. Rates that have a non-time denominator include exchange rates, literacy rates and electric flux.

In describing the units of a rate, the word "per" is used to separate the units of the two measurements used to calculate the rate (for example a heart rate is expressed "beats per minute"). A rate defined using two numbers of the same units (such as tax rates) or counts (such as literacy rate) will result in a dimensionless quantity, which can be expressed as a percentage (for example, the global literacy rate in 1998 was 80%) or fraction or as a multiple.

What is the difference between ratio and rate?

A ratio is the comparison between two numbers with the same unit. For example 3 oranges to two oranges. On the other hand, a rate is an indication of the measurements of different units per unit. For example, the statement 3 oranges/ person shows the relationship between the measurement of oranges per person

page 60;Question#4:

4. Determine the unit rate in each situation.

a) An orca swims 110 km in 2 h.

b) A Canada goose flies 800 km in 12.5 h.

64 km/hr

c) Cathy plants 45 daffodils in 30 min.

Jex %%%%%'s Rate Growing Post

Part 1

Today we had to pick a question from page 60 and page 61. We also have to define what rate and ratio is.
Rate:

Rate is a comparison of 2 things that are related. Ex. Hearts beats/ secs.

Ratio:

Ratio is comparing the same quantities.
Ex. 4:3m , 8:3

Questions

4. Determine the unit rate in each situation.
a) An Orca swims 110 km in 2 h. km / h 110/2 55/1 The answer is 55km/1h. What you do is first you have to divide the 2 to make 1. Then you do the same thing to the other side 110/2=55.

b) A Canada goose flies 800 km in 12.5 h. Km/h 800/12.5 64/1 The answer is 64/per 1 hour. All you do is divide 12.5 to make one and you divide 800 by 12.5 to make 64.

c) Cathy plants 45 daffodils in 30 min. Daffodils/mins 45/30 1.5/1 The answer is 1.5 Daffodils per minute. You divide 30 by itself then you divide 45 by 30.

Question 13

12. The rate at which glaciers melt is increasing globally. The Saskatchewan Glacier near Banff has receded 1.5 km in the last 75 years. The Peyto Glacier shown below receded 1320 m from 1923 to 1993. Which glacier had the greater annual rate of melting?

Saskatchewan Glacier:
1500m
------ = 20m/year
75years

Peyto Glacier: 1320m
------- = 18.86m/year
70 year
The Saskatchewan Glacier has the greater annual rate of melting.

Part 2

Today we had to figure out how much ingredients for 10 people and how many for 1 people.

Well all you do is multiply each recipe by 2.5 then you will get 10. If getting one divide 10 because whatever you got you have to divide by 10 to make 1.

Hello!

Hello everybody!

This is Kim, your student mentor! Hope you all are having a great week!

I'm just wondering, what can I do to help you in this class? Do you have any ideas?

The site you guys have here looks pretty cool. I think math would have been easier for me in grade 8 if I had a cool website like this to keep notes organized. Do you guys like having class like this too?

Do you have any questions for me? I was thinking that I better make an effort to make myself known as me, instead of the crazy person who posts pirate videos.

Speaking of which, here is another one. Tell me what you think.

Jennifer's BOB 2

In this scribe we had to Show some examples of answers that were wrong.
-What was your mistake.
-How will you remember what to do in future tests.

My mistake was not reading the question correctly and also not studying all that much . To improve this , i will study from now on for future math tests .

1. In a group of 84 students surveyed, the ratio of students preference is seven oatmeal eaters to four granola eaters to three toasted 0 eaters.

of 84 students, how many prefer oatmeal ?
Of 84 students, how many prefer granola ?
What percent ( to one decimal place ) of the group prefers toasted 0's ?

2. A rapid transit has 17 passengers on it as it starts to run. At the first stop 3 passengers get off and 37 passengers get on. What is the ratio of the number of passengers who were on the train as it arrived in the station to the number who were on the train when it left the station?
Express your answer in the lowest terms?

Noelle's BOB2 ratio

Hello Everybody,

One question that i got wrong with the test, was question number 4.

The question is :
Four students are runninh for student council president. Of 30 Students polled, 15 chose Mike, 3 chose Patricia, 6 chose Brian, and the rest chose karen. what is the ratio of votes for girls to votes for boys in the student council election? express the ratio in lowest terms.

The answer was choice a, but i chose b.
The reason i got that wrong was because i switched the ratio. The correct answer was 3:7 and I chose 7:3.

The next question was:
Question number 5

Eric is able to stop 85% of the shots on goal. If he faces 27 shots on goal, how many goals would likely be scored on him?

The correct answer was option b which was 4, but the answer i put was option c which was 9.

PLEASE COMMENT, BLAH.

Darlene's BOB & RATIO for Oct. 20

Today in class we did a lot of work that had to to with part-to-part ratios, part-to-total ratios and part-to-part-to-part ratios . Then Mr. Harbeck assigned us to make a scribe post about it.

Part to Part Ratios
  • Green to Blue = 6:1
  • Blue to Yellow = 1:4
  • Red to Green = 6:6
Part to Total Ratios
  • Green to Total = 6:17
  • Blue to Total = 1:17
Three Part Ratios
  • Yellow to Green to Blue = 4:6:1
  • Red to Yellow to Green = 6:4:6
Ratio, Fraction, Decimal and Percent
  • Blue to Yellow = 1:4, 1/4, 0.25 & 25%
Equivalent Ratios
  • Red to Green = 6:6
Simplification :
  • Red to Green = 3:3
Red : 6 divided by 2 = 3
Green : 6 divided by 2 = 3

The three questions !
  1. What would the ratio be for Green, Yellow to Total ?
  2. What would the ratio be for Yellow, Red, Blue, Green to total ?
  3. How would you write Green to Total in fraction, decimal and percent ?
Part 2

Mr. Harbeck told us to re Bob our Bob post and talk about our mistakes on our test.

The mistakes I made on my test was not expressing the ratio in lowest terms and reading the question wrong even though the important things I needed to know was already highlighted.

Ex.

The ratio of the red cards to the whole deck is :
  • I put in 2:4 instead of 1:2. I forgot to express the answer in the lowest terms.
I will remember to express the ratio in lowest terms by reading the highlighted words carefully next time.

I am going to use the one I just used.
Yellow to Red
6:10 = 3:5

6/2 = 3
10/2 = 5

Three Questions for you to do.
1) What is the Red to Total in an equivalent ratio?

2) Make a Part to Part to Part ordering the colours of M&M's from least to greatest.

3) How many Part to Part ratios could you make if there were two more colours there?

This is my BOB scribepost.
Please comment.

BOB Continued

I made mistakes by not looking my work over and by not going back to questions that I didn't get.
I can fix that on future tests by going back to do the hard questions later and reading the questions very slowly.

Warren stopped 90% of all the shots. There were 30 shots attempted. How many shots made it in?

Bob Part 2

Some mistakes I made on the test were:
- I didn't read the question carefully
- I didn't show my work based on ratios
- I didn't simplify some of the answers

What I need to do for the next test is:
- Read the question at least 2 times
- Make sure I put the answer in the lowest term

Questions that gave me difficulty were:

6. A stable has 39 horses available for trail rides. Of these horses, 26 are all born, 8 were mainly white, and the rest are black. Express in lowest terms the ratio of brown horses to mainly white horses to black horses.
a) 13 : 4 : 2 b) 13 : 4 : 5 c) 26 : 8 : 5 d) 39 : 26 : 8

8. A picture frame has a width to length ratio of 5 : 7. If the width of the photo is 9 cm, the length of the photo is
a) 11 cm b) 12.6 cm c) 14 cm d) 16 cm

Answer these questions in the comment box.

Larrisa's BOB for Oct.20,2009

1. Make 3 part-to-part ratios, 2 part to total ratios, and 2 three part ratios.

2. yellow to red = 4:8
3. blue to yellow = 1:4

Part to total ratio
1. blue to total = 1:17
2. green to total = 6:17

Three part ratio
1. blue to green to yellow = 1:6:4
2. green to red to blue = 6:8:1

2. Choose one ratio that you have done and show how to write that ratio in ratio notation, fraction, decimal and percent form.

Green
to Yellow

Ratio Notation:
6:6

Fraction:
6/6 & if you divide 6 by 6 you get 1/1 for the lowest terms

Decimal:
1.00

Percent:
100 %

3. Choose one ratio that you have written and show how to create equivalent ratios.

green to total = 6:17

4. Make 2 questions.

-What is the ratio of dark to light colors ?

-What is the ratio of green to red to total ?

- Show how to write yellow to green to red in ratio and ratio notation, fraction, decimal and percent form.

Ratio & BOB

Today , Mr. Harbeck went over some of our posts . He commented on my capitals and said that I forgot to make his first letter a capital . so there you go Harbeck-o . happy ? (: Okay , so , here is my assignment . Though , i don't think you can see the picture , or is it just my computer ? .. hm :O

Part to Part ratio
blue to green 1:6
yellow to red 4:6
yellow to green 4:6

Part to total ratio
green to total 6 : 17
blue to total 1: 17

Three part ratio
red to green to blue 6 : 6 : 1
red to yellow to blue 6 : 4 : 1

The ratio I picked is :
ratio-2:4
fraction-2/4
decimal-o.5
percent-50%
word- 2 to 4 .

The three questions i picked are
a) What is the ratio of blue to red?
b) What is the ratio of yellow to blue to total?
c) What is the ratio of green to total ?

Joseph's bob for 10.20.09

For homework today we had to do a post that had 3 part to part ratio, 2 part total, and 2 three part ratios
next write the ratio in ratio notation, fraction, decimal and percent form.
now pick one and show how to create equivalent ratios.

then make 3 questions that people can answer.an average gr.8 question.

1.part to part ratios
a) RED TO BLUE 6:1
b)GREEN TO RED 7:6
c)YELLOW TO BLUE 4:1
2.part to total ratios
a)RED TO TOTAL 6:18
b)BLUE TO TOTAL 1:18
3.three part ratios
a)RED TO BLUE TO GREEN 6:1:7
b)BLUE TO YELLOW TO GREEN 1:4:7

Now making a ratio into a percent, decimals, fractions.
BLUE TO TOTAL 1:18, 1/18, o.o5..., 05.....%

you cant simplify this ratio any further.

now the my three questions is:

a) What would be the ratio for yellow to total?
b) What is the ratio of red to blue?
c) What is the ratio of red to yellow to total?

percent: 16 %
ratio: 1:6
word: blue to red or blue:red
my three questions are :
- what is the ratio to red:blue:total ?
- what is the fraction of blue:yellow ?
- what is the percent of green:red ?

bob 2

My mistakes in my test were some of the multiple choice and the ordering ratio at the back of the test .

for example :
number 5 . Eric is able to stop 85% of the shots on goal. If he faces 27 shots on goal, how many goals would likely be scored to him ?
a. 3 b. 4 c. 9 d. 15

for that question i put , C . when the right answer was D .

One question that gave me difficulty was number 15 . Ordering the ratios from lowest terms.
Another is question 17 , About the teams with the scored by and scored against fact .

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What are the mistakes that I made from the test?

-I didn't read the questions carefully and didn't make it in lowest terms.
-I lost mistakes because I didn't show my work.
-I also lost marks from the multiple choice.

Next time there's a math test I will:

-Study harder
-read the questions carefully
-double check it when done
-use word ratios and complete the answer

Questions:

1)
Eric is able to stop 85% of the shots on goal. If he faces 27 shots on goal, how many goals would likely be scored on him?

a) 3 b) 4 c)9 d) 15

2) A picture frame with a width to length ratio of

Noelle's Ratio BOB Blog Post

Greetings Everybody,
This is my BOB post for the day about ratios.

[I had difficulties putting the pictures, but the picture i was going to select was the pictures with the m&ms.]

Now the next thing I will do is to show you three part to part ratios with the written ratio witch is needed:

Red to Green = 7 : 6

Green to Blue = 6 : 1

Blue to yellow = 1 : 6

My next step is to now show you two part to total ratios also with the word ratio to clearify my work:

Red to Total = 7 : 20

Blue to Total= 1 : 20

Now I will demonstrate two 3 part ratios, also with the word ratios:
[NOTE: Word ratios are important because you know what you are comparing.]

Green to Blue to Yellow = 6 : 1 : 6

Red to Blue to Total = 7 : 1 : 20

One of the ratios i chose was 7 : 20 which was a ratio of the red m&ms to the toal. One thing you can do to the ratio is change it into a fraction, which is easy in this case, all you have to do is flip the ratio sideways so that it is 7 over 20 or 7/20. Another form you can write this in is a percent, what you can do to make a percent is, turn 20 into 100 by multiplying it by 5, and what you do to 20, you'll have to do it to 7 aswell, and 7 multiplied by 5 is 35. Then you would get another fraction which is 35 over 100 or 35/100; also shown as 35%. Percents are then easily converted to decimals, just put a decimal point in front of it, making it 0.35.

Another thing you can do is make an equivalent ratio, all you would have to do it double the ratio on both sides. From 7:20 into 14:40. Simple.

My 3 comment questions are:

1. Would it make a big difference if the amounts all doubled ? Why or why not ?

2. Would all the ratios be easy to convert to a fraction, percent, and decimals ?

3. Can you split the ratios? Why or why not ?

Hope you learnt something and i hope you liked my post !

Ralph and BOB Ratio October 20 2009

Today in class we did alot of work with dealing with ratios. Our homework today was to do a post that had:

3 part to part ratios, 2 part to total ratios and 2 three part ratios

Then I had to:

write that ratio in ratio notation, fraction, decimal and percent form.

Next I would have to:

pick one and show how to create equivalent ratios.

Finally create 3 questions that you want people to answer in the comments. Do not make them to hard or too easy.

Part to Part Ratios
Green to Blue=7:1
Red to Green=6:7
Red to Yellow=6:4

Part to Total Ratios
Red to Total=6:18
Blue to Total=1:18

Three Part Ratios
Red to Blue to Yellow=6:1:4
Red to Blue to Green=6:1:7

Converting Ratio to a : Fraction, Decimal, and Percent

Red to Total : 6:18 or 6/18 or 0.33 (Infinite) or 33.33(infinite) %

Simplifying Ratios

6:18 simplified would be 1/3
6 (divided) by 6 is 1
18 (divided) by 6 is 3
6:18 = 1/3 = 0.33(infinite)

THE 3 QUESTIONS!!!

1. Express the ratio Yellow to Red in a Ratio, Fraction, Decimal, and Percent.

2. What would the ratio be if the Yellow to Red ratio if the ratio was simplified.

3. What would be the ratio of Red, Green, Blue, Yellow: Total

ANSWER MY QUESTIONS!
Some mistakes I made on my test were that:
1)I didn't read the questions well enough.
One question was about votes for student council.
The part I didn't read well enough was that the ratio had to be GIRLS to BOYS .
The ratio I put was boys to girls so I got the question wrong.
2)I should find more easier and faster ways to solve harder equations.
For question 17 I had to find out what two teams were equivalent.
I spent alot of time looking for a number that I could multiply the two numbers by, when I could have,
divide the first number by the second number and see which ones match.
3)I need to always go over the test again in case I missed a question.
I could of gotten more marks if I read over all the questions. Question number 16 was a really easy question but I accidentally skipped it and went onto the next question.
QUESTIONS
1. A picture frame has a width to length ratio of 10:14. If the width of the photo is 18 cm , the length of the photo is _______
a) 22 b)25.2 c)28 d) 32
2. A stable has 78 horses. Of these horses, 52 are brown, 16 are white and the rest are black. Express the ratio in the lowest terms of brown to white to black horses.
a) 26:4:5 b)13:4:2 c) 52:16:10 d) 26:8:5
