two term ratio is a comparison between two quantities of the same kind, for example:

There are 3 red sweets and 5 yellow sweets in the box. We can say the ratio of red sweets to yellow sweets is 3 to 5. Ratio can be written with the symbol ':' or as a fraction.

A three term ratio can be used to compare three quantities. In the example above, there are 3 DVDs, 4 marbles and 7 comic books. This is expressed as 3 to 4 to 7 or simply 3:4:7.
